Learning outcomes
The Practical Evaluation Internship (TPV) is aimed at ascertaining the student's skills relating to know-how and know how to be a doctor, which consists in applying biomedical and clinical knowledge to medical practice, in solving questions of professional ethics and medical ethics, in demonstrating an aptitude for solving clinical problems relating to the areas of medicine and surgery and related specialties, laboratory and instrumental diagnostics and
public health; to apply the principles of effective communication in the health sector.
Prerequisites
TPV can be attended not before the fifth year of the course and after having passed all the fundamental exams of first four years.
The practical training (TPV) is organized according to the laws and educational regulations of each study course.
Programme
The Practical Evaluation Internship (TPV) in Clinical Medicine is designed to provide students with the fundamental competencies required for the assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and management of patients admitted to an Internal Medicine ward. The program includes medical history taking, physical examination, interpretation of vital signs, laboratory and instrumental findings, and the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the most common internal medicine disorders.
Main topics:
* Acute and chronic heart failure.
* Arterial hypertension and hypertensive emergencies.
* Diabetes mellitus and its major acute and chronic complications.
* Ischemic heart disease and atrial fibrillation.
* Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory failure.
* Pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infections.
* Chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury.
* Anemia and fluid and electrolyte disorders.
* Pharmacological management and clinical monitoring of patients with internal medicine conditions.
The internship includes participation in daily ward activities, bedside rounds, discussion of clinical cases, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and planning of diagnostic and therapeutic pathways, with the aim of developing clinical reasoning, decision-making skills, and the multidisciplinary management of patients with complex medical conditions.

Lessons mode
TPV in the medical field takes place for a number of hours corresponding to 5 CFU corresponding to 100 hours to be completed consecutively within 1 calendar month (each CFU reserved for the internship must correspond to at least 20 hours of professionalizing teaching activity and no more than 5 hours of individual study).
Frequency
Mandatory ward attendance
Exam mode
The oral assessment is designed to evaluate the student’s acquisition of the knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical competencies developed during the internship. The examination includes questions on the main topics covered in the Internal Medicine ward and assesses the student’s ability to:
* Obtain and interpret a patient’s medical history and physical examination findings.
* Recognize the clinical presentation of common internal medicine conditions.
* Interpret vital signs and basic laboratory and diagnostic test results.
* Formulate differential diagnoses and discuss appropriate diagnostic pathways.
* Describe evidence-based management strategies for common medical disorders, including heart failure, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, respiratory diseases, and kidney disease.
* Demonstrate clinical reasoning and decision-making skills through the discussion of clinical cases.
* Communicate using appropriate medical terminology and justify diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
The assessment places particular emphasis on the integration of theoretical knowledge with clinical practice and the ability to apply a patient-centered approach in the management of medical conditions.
Example exam questions
What is the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF)?”
Arguments
- The practical training (TPV) is organized in three months. It will be done not before the fifth year of the course and after all the fundamental exams of first four years. The practical training is organized according to the laws and educational regulations of each study course.
