Prerequisites

Students must be familiar with the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, and bile ducts.

Programme

The initial lessons will focus on anatomy and physiology, with an overview of liver pathophysiology, to demonstrate to students how to establish the necessary prerequisites for the course in a specific area, which can then be extended to other organs of the digestive system. Subsequently, lessons will focus on individual organ pathologies (pancreas, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, and bile ducts), the liver transplant program as an example of multidisciplinary management of complex pathologies, and the discussion of clinical cases of jaundice as an example of the approach to clinical cases in general.

Frequency

Lectures and practical activities in the classroom or skill lab will be held in person with mandatory attendance.

Exam mode

The assessment will take the form of an oral exam on gastroenterology and endocrinology, which may also cover related topics in pathological anatomy. In general, the questions will focus on simple clinical cases described with symptoms, signs, and/or laboratory tests, and/or radiological imaging, and/or endoscopic findings. The oral exam may also focus, in part, on practical activities carried out in the classroom or in the skills lab.
