Objectives
By the end of the course, students should:
- Know the main stages in the history of medical methodology, with particular reference to empiricism, anatomical, experimental, and clinical methods; be able to use the acquired historical-methodological categories to analyze texts, cases, or significant moments in the history of medicine; critically evaluate the continuities and transformations of different methodological models and their impact on modern medicine; clearly and comprehensively explain the main methodological models of the medical tradition, using appropriate historical-scientific vocabulary; and develop conceptual tools useful for independently exploring topics in the history and epistemology of medicine.
- Understand the classification of rare diseases, including those that lead to cancer susceptibility, the different transmission models for a correct assessment of reproductive risks, currently available genetic tests and the criteria for assessing appropriate prescriptions, informed consent and access criteria for genetic testing for minors, the genotype-phenotype relationship of the genetic diseases covered during the course, and the concepts of clinical and genetic heterogeneity, penetrance, and variability.
- Understand the principles of psychometric evaluation and testing techniques, recognize the characteristics of the main cognitive and personality tests, and be able to use clinical interview and effective communication techniques to manage the doctor-patient relationship.
- Understand the main models of preclinical trials, the different phases of clinical drug trials and the related ethical implications, be able to identify the primary objectives and limitations of the two phases of the trial, and be able to outline the most appropriate strategies for carrying out a trial project.
- Understand the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (robotics, intelligent systems, knowledge engineering, NLP), databases and information systems (Web, IR, digital libraries, integration, and Big Data), machine learning for biological and biomedical data, and the related ethical aspects; be able to apply AI and machine learning methods to the management, integration, and analysis of biological and biomedical data; critically evaluate models, data, and ethical implications in the use of AI in the biomedical field; clearly communicate results, methods, and critical issues to specialists and non-specialists; be able to independently update and deepen knowledge of tools and methodologies in the field
The course also aims to explain, through a multidisciplinary medical and nursing presentation, the characteristics of a multiprofessional approach to patients, optimizing the specific skills of each professional.
The objective of the C.I. is to provide students with additional tools related to patient care, both in terms of recognizing signs and symptoms and in dealing with non-deferrable emergencies such as cardiac arrest and other emergencies that can occur both in hospital and out-of-hospital settings. Students will understand venous vascular access systems and the specifics of intensive care settings. They will evaluate the complexity and implications of a multidisciplinary approach implemented by medical and nursing professionals. They will gain a preliminary understanding of the economic principles governing public healthcare and assess their implications for healthcare provision.
The issue of chronicity and the care of those with chronic conditions, both in hospital and community settings, is introduced. The public healthcare system and the economic principles that govern it are also explained in a preliminary manner, with the aim of improving healthcare provision.
An additional objective of the course is knowledge of the IT tools useful for managing and caring for patients, with particular reference to occupational medicine.
An additional commitment of the course is to deepen knowledge of the English language, with particular emphasis on reading and composing scientific papers in English.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student should be able to take a medical history and perform a physical examination of gastroenterological and endocrinological patients.
Prerequisites
To acquire anatomical and pathophysiological knowledge of the neck, thorax, and abdomen.
Programme
Collection of medical history and clinical examination of the neck, thorax, and abdomen.
Semiotics of the acute abdomen.
Books
All texts on clinical methodology and medico-surgical semiotics are valid.
