At the end of the course the student must: be able to critically evaluate and correlate clinical symptoms / signs and functional alterations with the main gastrointestinal and endocrine pathologies; be able to do an anamnesis and an objective examination of the gastroenterological and endocrinological patient; be aware of the epidemiology and socio-economic impact of the main gastrointestinal and endocrine diseases.

Yearly/Cultural prerequisites. Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the gastrointestinal and endocrine systems, as well as fundamental understanding of general pathology and medical semeiotics, which are essential for interpreting the pathophysiological and clinical mechanisms discussed during the course.

Module: GASTROENTEROLOGY

Disorders of the gut-brain interactions; Esophageal motor disorders; Gastro-esophageal reflux disease and relative complications; Gastroduodenal Diseases (dyspepsia, acute and chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and Helicobacter pylori infection); Celiac disease and food intolerances; Inflammatory bowel diseases and relative complications; Diverticular Disease; Acute and chronic pancreatitis; Acute and chronic liver disease of infectious, metabolic, iatrogenic or autoimmune etiology; Cholestatic diseases; Multiple endocrine syndromes and neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.

Professionalizing activities: Clinical history and examination of gastroenterological patient; Problem-solving activities in out-patients with gastrointestinal diseases.

Diseases of the hypothalamic–pituitary axis; dyslipidemias and metabolic syndrome; diabetes mellitus (classification, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and clinical presentation); acute and chronic complications of diabetes and new pharmacological treatments; hirsutism; hypo- and hyperthyroidism; dietary aspects of endocrine diseases; hypo- and hyperparathyroidism; parathyroid surgery and surgically relevant hyperparathyroidism; follicular thyroid carcinomas; medullary thyroid carcinoma; hypo- and hyperadrenalism; endocrine hypertension; hypogonadism and andropause; puberty and gynecomastia; erectile dysfunction; osteoporosis; hypoglycemic syndromes; obesity and underweight; endocrine disruptors; transgender health (endocrine aspects of gender incongruence).

The course includes presentation and discussion of clinical cases in class and hands-on professional training activities, aimed at deepening and practicing topics relevant to the final examination, with a particular focus on the correlation between pathophysiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects.

Attendance at both lectures and professional practical activities is mandatory and represents a necessary requirement for admission to the final examination.

The examination will be conducted in person and consists of two oral assessments, covering the module in Endocrinology / Endocrine Surgery and the module in Gastroenterology / Abdominal Surgery. The final grade will be calculated as the average of the marks obtained in the two assessments.

During the oral examinations, candidates may be required to discuss representative clinical scenarios, to outline the principal diagnostic and therapeutic pathways, and to provide a critical appraisal of the indications and contraindications for surgical and medical treatments in the respective fields.
Further areas of assessment may include the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of major endocrine and gastroenterological disorders, as well as the ability to integrate clinical and surgical knowledge in the comprehensive management of the patient.
