Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
describe the functional anatomy and pathophysiology of the musculoskeletal system, with particular attention to osteoarticular, muscular, and tendon disorders;
understand the pathogenetic, diagnostic, and therapeutic principles of the major musculoskeletal and joint diseases, whether acute or chronic, degenerative, traumatic, or inflammatory;
integrate diagnostic and technological tools (movement analysis, sensors, imaging, biomechanical models) in the assessment and monitoring of motor recovery;
interact effectively with the multidisciplinary team (orthopedics, physiatrists, physiotherapists, biomedical engineers, nurses) through shared technical language.
Upon completion of the course, students should demonstrate:
possess integrated theoretical and practical knowledge of medicine, biomechanics, and rehabilitation engineering;
be able to apply this knowledge to the diagnosis, management and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
Prerequisites
To successfully complete the course, students must have acquired:
Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and general pathology of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.
Knowledge of the pathophysiological processes of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases is helpful.
Fundamentals of biomedical engineering and technologies applied to medicine.
Recommended prerequisites:
Basic skills in the use of instruments for measuring and analyzing movement.
Ability to consult scientific literature to gain a deeper understanding of biomechanics and technological rehabilitation.
Programme
Module: Diseases of the joint system
Recognize the most common diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (rheumatic diseases), indicating the main therapeutic approaches. Identify the conditions that, in this area, require the professional contribution of a rheumatologist or orthopedic specialist.
Have a thorough understanding of the concept of disability. Recognize orthopedic, rheumatological, and neurological conditions that can cause disability. Identify the conditions that require the intervention of a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Module: Diseases of the musculoskeletal system
Arthritic Pathology: General Foundations. Osteoarthritis of the Cervical and Lumbar Spine: Lumbar and cervical stenosis. Disc Herniations: Lumbar and cervical. Vertebral Instability. Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain. Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder, Hand, Elbow, Knee, and Hip. Tendinopathies and Subcutaneous Tendon Ruptures: General concepts, diagnostic framework, and treatment. Most Common Orthopedic Conditions: Insertional tendinopathies, such as lateral and medial epicondylitis. Rotator Cuff Disorders. Hand Pathologies: De Quervain’s syndrome, Dupuytren’s contracture, stenosing tenosynovitis of the hand, peripheral nerve entrapment neuropathies.
Module: Physical and rehabilitative medicine
Basic concepts of motor and cognitive rehabilitation, top-down and bottom-up approaches, patient-centered approach, feedback, rehabilitation using virtual reality systems, eye-tracking systems, rehabilitation through robotic systems, exoskeletons, prosthetics and orthotics, brain-computer interface systems for rehabilitation, brain stimulators, motion analysis systems, baropodometric and stabilometric platforms, artificial intelligence in rehabilitation, assistive technologies, health technology assessment

Rehabilitation Settings
Rating scales used in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Physical energies used in rehabilitation: electrotherapy, magnetotherapy, shortwave diathermy, computerized thermostatic hyperthermia, ultrasound, shock waves, vibration energy, laser therapy.
• Instrumental movement assessment: optoelectronic, kinetic, and surface electromyography systems. Applications of these methods to orthopedic and neurological conditions will be discussed.
• Postural assessment using video-rasterstereography systems.
• Robotic rehabilitation and virtual reality.
• Orthoses: ISO definitions, codes required by the tariff nomenclature, materials used, different types for the upper and lower limb, biomechanics, traditional and CAD/CAM manufacturing techniques.

Frequency
Mandatory
Exam mode
Oral exam to assess acquired knowledge and skills.
A written exam covering the topics covered in the program may be used as an assessment method.
The instructors' assessment of each module contributes equally to the final grade.
The assessment will take place during the dedicated exam sessions, and in any case at the end of all modules of the integrated course.
Example exam questions
Conservative treatments for patients with osteoarthritis;
Recommended physical energies and possible instrumental assessments of deabulation
Principles of robotics and instrumental movement analysis
