Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student must:
Recognize the signs and symptoms of the main surgical emergencies and pathologies (appendicitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction, hernias, diverticulitis).
Understand the clinical management of the complex surgical patient and the criteria for therapeutic prioritization.
Understand the principles of complex networks and their application to biomedicine.
Analyze biological and clinical networks using measures of modularity and centrality.
Interpret network analysis results in the context of precision medicine and drug repurposing.
Understand the systemic approach to pathophysiology and the management of complex patients.
Use multidimensional assessment tools (comorbidity, frailty, iatrogenic risk).
Apply an integrated, patient-centered decision-making model.
Know the pathogenesis and management of major healthcare-associated infections, including those caused by multidrug-resistant microorganisms.
Apply principles of infection prevention and the rational use of antimicrobials.

Prerequisites

Solid knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and general pathology of the main organ systems.
Basic understanding of microbiology, pharmacology, and clinical methodology.
Fundamental knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, and the principles of evidence-based medicine.
Introductory competence in biostatistics and biomedical informatics for the interpretation of network data.
Awareness of ethical, deontological, and safety principles in clinical practice.

Lessons mode

Teaching will be delivered through in-person lectures, asynchronous remote learning, practical training in hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and day hospitals, as well as exercises, seminars, simulations, laboratory experiences, and clinical case analyses.

Frequency

Attendance is mandatory for at least 70% of the scheduled teaching hours; this threshold is required to fulfill the attendance obligation.

Exam mode

The assessment will consist of written examinations with multiple-choice quizzes and oral examinations.

Example exam questions

1.Discuss the clinical and decision-making approach to the complex patient, highlighting how multidimensional assessment and teamwork can improve therapeutic management.
2.Explain how the principles of Network Medicine can be applied to understanding comorbidities and to the personalization of treatments in internal medicine and surgery.
3.Analyze the role of healthcare-associated infections in complex patients, with particular attention to multidrug-resistant microorganisms and prevention strategies.
4.Describe the main clinical presentations of abdominal surgical emergencies and discuss how clinical complexity and comorbidities influence therapeutic decisions and care pathways.
