Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired theoretical knowledge and skills in conservative and restorative dentistry and endodontics. They will be able to recognize and diagnose the main lesions affecting dental tissues, understand the biological and clinical principles of conservative procedures, describe the properties and indications of restorative materials and adhesive systems, and explain the techniques used to perform direct restorations in anterior and posterior teeth. Students will also understand the principles of pulpal and periapical diagnosis, the main stages of endodontic treatment, and the criteria for the restorative rehabilitation of endodontically treated teeth, developing clinical reasoning and evidence-based treatment planning skills.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of human and dental anatomy, histology, physiology, and general pathology. Fundamental knowledge of dental anatomy, tooth hard tissues, and pulpal and periapical tissues, as well as the general principles of cariology and dental materials.
Programme
1. Biological principles of conservative and restorative dentistry. Patient assessment, clinical diagnosis, and treatment planning.
2. Diagnosis of dental caries and strategies for managing carious lesions, with particular emphasis on preserving dental tissues.
3. Restorative materials: properties, characteristics, and clinical indications of composite resins and adhesive systems.
4. Operative instruments, operative field isolation, and principles of enamel and dentin adhesion.
5. Direct anterior restorations: dental anatomy, colour assessment, discolourations, white lesions, and minimally invasive approaches.
6. Restorative techniques for Class III interproximal lesions, Class IV restorations involving reconstruction of the incisal edge, cervical lesions, diastema closure, and tooth shape modifications.
7. Direct posterior restorations: occlusal anatomy, diagnosis of carious lesions, cavity preparation, and reconstruction of interproximal walls.
8. Layering techniques, anatomical modelling, characterization, finishing, and polishing of direct composite restorations.
9. Dental traumatology: principles of management and techniques for tooth fragment reattachment.
10. Pulpal and periapical diagnosis: biological principles, clinical and instrumental assessment, and indications for endodontic treatment.
11. Fundamental principles of endodontic treatment: preparation and cleaning of the root canal system, shaping, obturation, and endodontic sealing.
12. Restoration of endodontically treated teeth: assessment of residual tooth structure, selection of the restorative strategy, and analysis of clinical cases.

Lessons mode
Teaching is delivered through traditional lectures, providing a systematic presentation of theoretical topics in conservative and restorative dentistry and endodontics. Lectures are supported by teaching presentations and clinical images to facilitate understanding of biological, diagnostic, and therapeutic principles and the main operative techniques.
Frequency
Attendance at lectures is compulsory, in accordance with the Degree Programme's academic regulations.
Exam mode
Learning will be assessed through an oral examination designed to verify the acquisition of theoretical knowledge in conservative and restorative dentistry and endodontics. Assessment will focus on students’ ability to describe the biological and clinical principles of conservative procedures, the indications for restorative materials and adhesive systems, direct restoration techniques, the principles of pulpal diagnosis and endodontic treatment, and the criteria for the restorative rehabilitation of endodontically treated teeth. The assessment will take into account the accuracy and completeness of answers, clinical reasoning skills, appropriate use of scientific terminology, and the ability to apply knowledge to treatment planning.
Example exam questions
1. What are the biological principles of conservative dentistry, and which criteria guide the selective removal of carious tissues?
2. What are the properties of composite materials and the fundamental principles of adhesion to enamel and dentin?
3. What are the operative steps involved in placing a direct composite restoration in anterior and posterior teeth?
4. How is the differential diagnosis of dental discolourations performed, and what are the main indications for minimally invasive restorative treatments?
5. What are the characteristics of Class III and Class IV lesions, and which restorative techniques can be used?
6. What are the principles of pulpal and periapical diagnosis, and which factors guide the indication for endodontic treatment?
7. What are the main stages of endodontic treatment, from cleaning and shaping the root canal system to obturation?
8. Which factors should be considered when selecting a restoration for an endodontically treated tooth?
