Know and know how to perform the surgical extraction technique, in particular that of the roots and the uncomplicated one of dental elements
Know the pre-operative assessment, planning and surgical technique for the extraction of impacted third molars
Know the accidents and complications of tooth extractions and know how to manage prevention and treatment
Know the diagnostic-therapeutic problems inherent in post-extraction oro-sinus communications.

Upon completion of the course the student must have acquired the following:
• Ability in diagnosing tooth pathologies that can be treated by tooth extraction and in understanding when a conservative approach is possible
• Knowledge and ability in using extraction instruments
• Knowledge of indications and contraindications to tooth extraction
• Knowledge and ability in performing simple extraction techniques
• Knowledge of surgical semiotics
• Management of the medically compromised patient
• Management of the patients before and after surgery
• Ability in performing local anesthesia and non-surgical extraction
• Knowledge and the ability in using general and oral surgical instruments
• Knowledge and ability in performing flap incision, reflection and suturing in oral surgery
• Knowledge and ability in performing not complicated surgical extraction of teeth and roots
• Knowledge about pre-operative assessment and management of surgical extraction of impacted third molar
• Management, prevention and treatment of complications after tooth extractions
• Knowledge about how diagnosing and treating oro-antral communications
• Knowledge about flaps and sutures; ability in performing a flap (incision, reflection, suturing)
• Ability in performing not complicated surgical extraction of teeth and roots

In order to understand the teaching content and to achieve the learning objectives, at the beginning of the didactic activities provided by the course it is essential that the student possesses adequate knowledge of anatomy, pharmacology, general pathology, special odontostomatological pathology, diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, medical sciences and histo-pathology

The professionalizing activity will be carried out in small groups, as regards working positions at the chair, extraction/surgical instruments, and suture techniques, while it will be carried out to all students together in the classroom as regards the solution of surgical questions and the therapeutic planning for impacted third molar extraction and for the management of the medically compromised patients.

Attendance is mandatory for both ex-cathedra and professionalizing activities.

The final exam, which takes place at the end of the course, consists of a written test, a practical test, and an oral test.
The written test is considered passed if the score is at least 18/30, it allows access to the subsequent tests, it is not evaluated in the final vote calculation and, if passed in each exam, it does not allow access to further tests of a subsequent exam. The written test consists of 30 multiple choice questions (A-E) and it must be completed within 40 minutes. The score given is 1 point if the answer is correct, 0 points if the answer is not provided, -0.5 points if the answer is incorrect.
The practical test consists in planning the treatment plan of a proposed case and /or in preparing the instruments necessary for a given procedure and /or in performing a given procedure.
In the assessment of the exam, the determination of the final vote considers the following elements:
1. knowledge of each proposed topic;
2. correctness in the description of the proposed procedures;
3. the correctness in planning and /or preparing the necessary instruments and /or in performing the proposed procedure;
4. the adequacy of each proposed procedure in relation to the competences that the student should have acquired at the end of the course;
5. the logic followed by the student in the presentation of the topics;
6. the use of an appropriate language;
The satisfaction of the elements n. 1, 2 and 3 is a necessary condition for passing the exam, with a score between 18 and 25; the satisfaction of the element n. 4 allows the achievement of a vote between 26 and 28; the satisfaction of the element n. 5 allows the achievement of a vote of 29 or 30; the satisfaction of the element n. 6 allows to get the praise.
