Learning outcomes

1. Knowledge and Understanding
The objective is for students to have a thorough and specialized understanding of the biological, surgical, and prosthetic principles governing implant dentistry:
- Explain in detail the biology and physiology of bone and the mechanisms of osseointegration.
- Describe the surgical anatomy of implant sites and donor sites, identifying critical anatomical structures.
- Distinguish and classify the various biomaterials, growth factors, and stem cells in pre-implant surgery.
- List and recognize the healing mechanisms of peri-implant soft tissue.
2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding
The objective is for the student to be able to apply theoretical knowledge to the planning and execution (simulated or clinical) of implant procedures:
- Plan and structure a comprehensive diagnosis (clinical and instrumental) and a standard and advanced implant-prosthetic treatment plan.
- Perform (in a training/simulated context) standard implant surgical techniques and advanced procedures (e.g., grafts, sinus lifts).
- Select and use the correct materials and methods for the fabrication of fixed and removable implant-supported prosthetics.
3. Making Judgements
The objective is for the student to be able to collect data, critically evaluate it, and formulate an independent and reasoned judgment on treatment choices and prognosis:
- Critically evaluate the validity and applicability of scientific evidence (EBM) when choosing between different treatment options.
- Justify the decision to resort to regenerative procedures (bone grafts, sinus lift) based on a risk-benefit assessment.
- Diagnose implant complications (e.g., peri-implantitis) and determine the most appropriate therapeutic approach (non-surgical or surgical) for resolution.
4. Communication Skills
The objective is for the student to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with the patient and the scientific community, using appropriate technical language:
- Communicate the treatment plan, biological costs, risks, and prognosis clearly and empathetically to the patient, obtaining comprehensive informed consent.
- Write clinical reports and surgical protocols in a structured and comprehensive manner, using standard international terminology.
- Present and discuss a complex clinical case in an academic setting, responding to questions and objections with reasoned explanations.
5. Learning Skills
The objective is for students to develop the metacognitive skills necessary to independently manage their continuing professional development:
- Develop a postgraduate professional development plan, identifying knowledge gaps and reliable sources to fill them.
- Monitor new technologies and methodologies (e.g., digital implantology, new biomaterials) to integrate them into their knowledge base.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of their learning process and the quality of their clinical practice, with a view to continuous improvement (clinical audit).

Prerequisites

To successfully complete the Integrated Implantology Course (Year V), students must possess and demonstrate mastery of the following areas:
A. Basic Medical-Biological Knowledge
1. Maxillofacial Anatomy: In-depth knowledge of critical anatomical relationships (e.g., inferior alveolar nerve, maxillary sinus, nasal fossa).
2. Bone Physiology and Biology: Understanding the processes of bone healing, modeling, and remodeling, and the biology of osseointegration.
3. Pharmacology: Knowledge of relevant drugs in surgery (anesthetics, antibiotics, analgesics) and management of drug interactions.
B. Principles of Oral Surgery and Asepsis
1. Surgical Anatomy: Detailed knowledge of the topographical anatomy and surgical anatomy of implant sites and donor sites.
2. Pathology: Knowledge, through semiotics and instrumental investigations, of surgically relevant pathologies involving the mucosa and jaw support structures.
3. Techniques and Instrumentation: Knowledge of surgical techniques, including indications and contraindications.
C. Preparatory Clinical Skills
1. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: Ability to perform a thorough history, perform a physical examination, and formulate a basic prosthetic treatment plan.
2. Dental Radiology: Ability to interpret intraoral and panoramic radiographs (OPG).
3. Oral Hygiene and Periodontics: Understanding periodontal health and ability to manage pre- and post-surgical hygiene protocols.
4. Sterilization and Asepsis: Knowledge and rigorous application of infection control protocols in the surgical environment.

Lessons mode

The teacher delivers face-to-face teaching using traditional methods, with audiovisual aids and following the lesson schedule as reported in the GOMP Classroom/Timetable System and published on the Degree Course website.

Frequency

Pursuant to paragraph 4.5 of the Regulations for the Master's Degree in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics, students are required to attend the CLMOPD's formal, informal, and professionalizing educational activities. Attendance is verified by instructors through signature/roll-call sheets based on updated lists provided by the Academic Secretariat as established by the CCLMOPD, as recommended by the CTP. A certificate of attendance for the mandatory educational activities of a course is required for students to take the relevant exam.

Exam mode

To pass the exam, a grade of at least 18/30 is required in each module.
To achieve a grade of 30/30 with honors, students must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all the topics covered in the course, being able to connect them in a logical and coherent manner.
