TPV DISCIPLINE ODONTOSTOMATOLOGICHE II [MED-28] Single channel

Chair (Coordinator) and Rapporteur: GABRIELLA GALLUCCIO

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will know the application modalities of dental therapies in the areas of Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, and Restorative Dentistry, with emphasis on how to manage patients with multidisciplinary needs.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired in both the disciplinary courses of the previous years and that attained through practical clinical application skills with the correct and consistently timed execution of therapeutic steps.
Through a critical review of practical therapeutic modalities, the student will acquire judgment skills regarding the appropriateness and feasibility of therapeutic plans, with emphasis on sharing them with the patient. This will also be done by compiling clinical reports of therapeutic courses carried out on patients and realized on a dedicated platform for clinical case presentation.
Through direct management of therapeutic phases, the student will be stimulated to develop communication skills with colleagues, supportive healthcare staff, and the patients themselves. Consequently, the acquisition of the predisposition for cultural updating in the study of innovative therapeutic modalities will be related.
Expected Learning Outcomes (Bloom's taxonomy and Dublin descriptors)

Prerequisites

The student must have acquired skills related to the disciplines included in the integrated course, as certified by the frequency of lectures and vocational training in the previous year's course. The necessary skills will be relevant to the knowledge (to know) and the clinical application of such knowledge (skills).
The student must therefore have successfully passed all fundamental examinations in the integrated disciplines and completed the vocational clinical training from previous years.

Programme

The practical internship assessment exam consists of a training course aimed at acquiring specific diagnostic and clinical-therapeutic skills and abilities. It is an integral part of university education and requires students to perform practical activities with increasing degrees of autonomy as primary operators, under the direct supervision of a teacher-tutor. It assesses the student's abilities in relation to the knowledge and skills acquired in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental and oral diseases. The certification and validation of the TPV is based on the number of hours of activity performed, the number of procedures performed, and a positive evaluation according to specific criteria, including: technical knowledge and knowledge of operating and safety protocols; manual skills; work organization and collaboration skills; and approach to patients.

Books

The texts suggested for preparation for the individual disciplinary examinations (Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry) are reference also for preparation for the exam of the integrated teaching

Lessons mode

The course is completed in the sixth year of the course provided that all the fundamental examinations related to the disciplines considered have been successfully passed; it is carried out for a number of hours corresponding to at least 15 CFU (at least 20 hours of professionalizing didactic activity and no more than 5 hours of individual study must correspond to each CFU reserved for internship) and is divided into activities carried out in the areas related to the disciplines of orthodontics, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, and pediatric dentistry.
Each internship will take place in different clinical divisions and subject areas, a clinic mentor will review the clinical act performed and issue a summary judgment on the candidate.

Frequency

Attendance at the practical assessment internship begins upon presentation of appropriate certification of the exams taken. The performance of the practical-assessment internship by the student must include periods of attendance consequent to the didactic organization of the Course of Studies such as to allow diversified successions in the different areas, to allow the proper conduct of the activities. On the student's TPV booklet will be noted the days and times of attendance, describing the activities carried out also with reflective insights on what was done and observed. The booklet will be completed and signed by the clinical tutor and countersigned by the TPV integrated course coordinating tutors.
The periods of attendance will end upon completion of all planned clinical activities and periods of attendance in the relevant departments.

Exam mode

Results related to the skills demonstrated with analysis of clinical cases specific to the disciplinary areas will be evaluated and a judgment of suitability will be made - if positive - on the skills demonstrated; It is considered passed only in the case of achievement of the judgment of suitability for each of the disciplinary areas. Passing is functional for access to the final evaluative practical test that precedes the discussion of the final dissertation.

Example exam questions

Multidisciplinary clinical case discussion and drafting of relevant treatment plan
Analysis of clinical procedures performed and treatment alternatives
