Through the collaboration between psychologists and physicians, the laboratory aims to provide advanced knowledge of eating disorders, metabolic disorders and chronic gastrointestinal disorders. It also aims to promote advanced knowledge of the psychological, social, biological and metabolic determinants of the aforementioned disorders as well as the psychological and medical maintenance factors that may be targeted by counselling interventions. The frequency of the hospital, the participation to team meetings, the observation of the administration and the involvement in the scoring of tests and questionnaires used for diagnostic purposes will promote learning of the diagnostic process, the communication of the diagnosis to the patient. Moreover it will increase knowledge about how to plan and conduct psychological support and counseling interventions in interaction with those provided by other professionals necessarily involved in the treatment of these disorders and how to plan and conduct interventions aimed at favoring the adherence to cares.

By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics:
The principles of healthy nutrition across the physiological stages of life (pregnancy, breastfeeding, prepubertal and pubertal age, older adulthood, and menopause), as well as the metabolic consequences of inadequate nutrition, whether due to excess or deficiency.
Feeding and Eating Disorders (FEDs), including their medical consequences and organic complications.
The functioning of the gastrointestinal system and its major disorders.
The use of the main psychological assessment tools in the evaluation of feeding and eating disorders and gastroenterological conditions.
The major chronic inflammatory diseases and the interactions among the immune system, the nervous system, and behavior.
The main psychological and clinical interventions for feeding and eating disorders and gastroenterological conditions.
In addition, students will be expected to demonstrate the ability to:
conduct an appropriate diagnostic assessment and formulate a differential diagnosis;
identify areas requiring further clinical investigation and select appropriate assessment tools;
propose a suitable intervention plan in each of the four subject areas covered by the course.

Critical skills of understanding and a good level of motivation to learn and work in group are pre-requisites for the comprehension and good performance at examination. Moreover, basic knowledge and good comprehension of the written Italian and English texts, of statistical analitic tecniques and of methodological bases of empirical research are necessary for understanding the supplementary materials used in the course.

Module: LABORATORY FOR EVALUATION AND COUNSELLING IN EATING AND METABOLISM DISORDERS
The course consists of tho parts. The first part, more theoretical, will address the following topics: 1) classification, clinical presentation, prevalence and etiology of eating disorders; 2) assessment and cognitive and neural correlates; 3) clinical interventions.
The second part is highly practical and will consist of participation in activities related to case conceptualization, test scoring, simulated clinical interviews and consultations, role-playing, and report writing.


Module: LABORATORY FOR EVALUATION AND COUNSELLING IN CHRONIC DISORDERS OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM
The Gastroenterology module will address the following topics
-Introduction to the digestive system: anatomy and physiology, nutrients absorption and gastrointestinal microbiota
-Main symtoms, signs and disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract
-Main symtoms, signs and disorders of the lower gastrointestinal tract
-Main symtoms and disorders of the liver and the biliary system



Module: ELEMENTS OF CLINICAL NUTRITION AND ENDOCRINOLOGY IN EATING AND METABOLIC DISORDERS
Recommended intake levels of energy and nutrients for the Italian population. Dietary adequacy during physiological phases (pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood and adolescence, geriatric age, menopause). Excess weight: overweight, obesity. Metabolic syndrome. Body composition. Feeding and Eating Disorders: somatic complications.



Module: CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY DISORDERS OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM
-Psychological assessment in gastroenterology. Use of interviews, questionnaires, and interviews. The role of the health psychologist in the gastroenterology team.
-Inflammatory bowel disease and psychoimmunology. Interactions between the immune system and the mind/brain system.
-Self-regulation and gastroenterological diseases.
-Psychological-clinical interventions in gastroenterology: first, second, and third (ACT) waves cognitive behaviour therapy.

Attendance at the theoretical (medical) modules is strongly recommended. Attendance at the practical (psychological) workshops is mandatory.

The students will be presented with a clinical case and asked both theoretical and practical questions related to it, such as identifying the most likely diagnosis, formulating a differential diagnosis, determining which issues require further assessment and how they should be investigated, and proposing appropriate clinical management.
