2)The aim of the course is increasing the knowledge acquired after the Bechelor Degree concerning the investigation methods usually applied in the analysis of geomaterials for Cultural Heritage.

OF 2) Knowing some advanced analytical methods used recently in the characterization of the main geomaterials applied in the cultural heritage
OF 3) Knowing the steps in creating a diagnostic project applied to geomaterials (sampling, documentation, intervention planning)

Learning outcomes

The student should be able to understand the role plants play in cultural heritage, including archaeological sites, historic buildings, cultural landscapes and plants used in food, cultural practices and rituals of the past.
The student should be able to clearly and effectively communicate complex concepts related to plant materials and cultural heritage conservation, both in written and oral form.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of botany.
Definition of mineral. Microscopic identification of the main minerals. Fundamental minerals of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Macroscopic and microscopic identification of the main igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, with particular attention to those used in the field of cultural heritage.

Programme

Module Geosciences
The lectures will be focused on the methodologies of analysis usually applied for an archaeometric
characterization of the geomaterial. The lectures will be both theorical and practical with particula
attention to the elaboration of data.
The topics addressed are summarized below:
-Sampling methods
-in-situ analysis
-Optical Microscopy
-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
-Raman Spectroscopy
-X-ray Diffraction (XRD)
-Scanning Electron Microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS)
-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)


Module plant biology
The contribute of plant biology to the study of cultural heritage. Wood anatomy. The use of plants in the past: palethnobotany. The origin of agriculture. The use of stable isotopes in the reconstruction of past environments. Archaeopalynology for the study of environment and climate changes of the past. Case studies from the Mediterranean area. Field seminars in archaeological sites, museums and historical buildings.
