No prerequisites.

The course will focus on the analysis of the historical period from the Peace of Lodi to the Congress of Vienna. Main themes of early modern history will be examined in depth and in chronological order: the origin of modern states; geographical explorations; the discovery and conquest of the New World; encounters and clashes between different civilisations; and major theological and ideological issues that cause the fracture of European culture between the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. Galilei and the scientific revolution. Revolts and revolutions; mercantilism and absolutism. Slavery. The crisis of the political and cultural order: from the Enlightenment to the French Revolution. Napoleon. Congress of Wien

Oral examination to test knowledge of events, contexts and ideas in early modern history. To pass the exam, the student must place the event or issue in the right political and chronological context, with details of causes and consequences. The deeper the analysis and the more reasoned the answer, the higher the grade.
The general examination is a test of the student’s ability to demonstrate knowledge of events, contexts and ideas. The exam focuses on themes from the course. A successful exam is one in which the student can discuss the historical, political and cultural framework and any protagonist.

At least three questions on the textbook part (one for each historical period. Examples: Diffusion of the Reformation; 17th century Holland; Napoleon the Emperor). The student must answer each question at least sufficiently. There will then be at least one question on the monographic part, usually a chapter of the book.
