Objectives
The course provides the concepts, theories and research techniques for the sociological analysis of networks and lifestyles
Knowledge and understanding: the first objective of the course is to provide adequate knowledge of the conceptual and theoretical framework of reference for the sociological analysis of networks and lifestyles, and a methodological preparation aimed both at information gathering techniques and at those of analysis more suitable in this field of study.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: The second objective of the course is to provide the ability to use the acquired knowledge taking into account the specificities of the different areas in which the analysis of networks and lifestyles is applied. The course will allow to acquire logical-analytical skills through the realization of the project work; improve communicative skills through the exhibition of the work carried out in the classroom, also through the use of specially designed supports (slides, audiovisuals, infographics, etc.); initiate students to experiment with methods of peer cooperation (group work); improve writing skills (presentation of a short written report of the project).
Making judgments: A further specific objective of the course concerns the ability of analysis and reflection in an autonomous form, through the critical reading of the debate and interpretative models, the analysis and discussion in class of Italian and international empirical research on networks and styles of life, the realization of group projects with the aim of applying the acquired knowledge, paying particular attention to the role played by communication within social dynamics.
Communication skills: the course also aims to develop communication skills through the presentation and discussion in class of group work and through participation in debates with external guests.
Ability to continue the study autonomously in the course of life: through the analysis and reflection on the theoretical and methodological framework and the realization of targeted projects, the course aims to provide skills and mastery of the vocabulary and specific techniques of the discipline to put the student in the condition to continue his training project.
Learning outcomes
Module: Social networks and lifestyles
Students attending the course will acquire advanced knowledge of how social networks and lifestyles are constructed.
They will have the opportunity to apply this knowledge by carrying out project work. The workshop module will enable them to acquire skills relating to the design and implementation of an applied social research project.
They will develop a critical analysis of theoretical concepts, applying them to a case study.
They will enhance their communication skills through the presentation of their project work.
They will enhance their learning skills by working individually and in groups, putting the knowledge they have learnt into practice.
Module: Laboratory of Applied Research
Knowledge and comprehension skills: acquisition of the fundamental vocabulary of sociological analysis and of the most consolidated theoretical configurations, mastery of integrated references to the qualifying themes of the discipline and a methodological preparation aimed at both information gathering techniques and those of analysis most suited to this field of study.
Autonomy of judgement: the ability to analyse and reflect autonomously, through the critical reading of the debate and interpretative models, the analysis and discussion of Italian and international empirical research on networks and lifestyles, the realisation of group projects with the aim of applying the knowledge acquired.
Communication skills: through the presentation and classroom discussion of group work.

Programme
Module: Social networks and lifestyles
The following thematic modules will be covered:
- Basic module: analysis of the concepts 'lifestyle', 'social participation', distinction. Reference to classical theoretical contributions and the main reference theories.
- Applied research workshop: realisation of a research project that will be presented in the classroom at the end of the lessons. In order to carry out the project, the following points will be addressed: design of the research, critical analysis of a concept, design of the survey instruments, data analysis, presentation of the results) The students will work in groups and will structure a project work dealing with a specific aspect of the investigation.
Module: Laboratory of Applied Research
The course provides the concepts, theories and research techniques for the sociological analysis of networks and lifestyles, as well as a methodological grounding in both information-gathering and analysis techniques most suitable for this field of study. In addition to reviewing the fundamental theoretical aspects and analysing some particularly significant studies, students will be introduced to the practice of research.
Specifically, the course includes a first part of lectures oriented to offer the theoretical-epistemological references of the sociological analysis of networks and lifestyles and to illustrate the different survey and analysis techniques typical of this field of study (6 Cfu). A second part will be dedicated to the realisation of group work allowing students to test and refine the knowledge and skills acquired in the first part of the course (3 Cfu).
The course is divided into the following thematic nuclei: a) theoretical and methodological framework of reference of the sociological analysis of networks and lifestyles; b) presentation and discussion of national and international empirical research based on the sociological analysis of networks and lifestyles in different thematic fields; c) group work in the classroom to apply the acquired skills.
