Course program
The course focuses on the impact of digital media and the implications of the operating mechanisms of platforms, algorithms and artificial intelligence on actors and processes of the information media ecosystem concerning various themes, including power relations between publishers, journalists, platforms and other actors; practices of the journalistic profession; information product formats; information consumptions; business models and economic sustainability of journalistic businesses and editorial initiatives promoted by various actors.
During the course, students will do project work.
Prerequisites
There are no requirements.

The texts will be communicated before the beginning of the course.
Teaching mode
Because of the Covid-19 outbreak and on the basis of rules established by the Government and Health authority, the course or parts of it may also be held at a distance or in blended mode (in presence and at a distance). In any case during the lessons in presence safety regulations will be guaranteed.
Lessons of frontal didactics.
Lessons-meetings with professionals from the publishing and editorial information.
Moreover, the professor promotes a strong interaction between the students and the teachers during lessons.
Frequency
Attendance of the course is not compulsory, but it is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
The exam is oral.
For attending students, it focuses on the special issue of Problemi dell’Informazione "Journalism beyond newsrooms. New forms, practices, and experiences of journalism beyond the institutional newsroom", edited by Sergio Splendore & Elena Valentini, Problemi dell’Informazione, n. 1 - 2025 (a selection of articles indicated by the teacher), download free of charge for Sapienza student on www.rivisteweb.it (will be published in April 2025)
The final evaluation is also based on the evaluation of the project work reserved for attending students and takes into account the other activities on the materials presented and discussed during the course.
For non-attending students, the exam focuses on the texts indicated in the bibliography for non-attending students.
A score of not less than 18/30 is required to pass the exam. The student must demonstrate:
- to have acquired a sufficient knowledge of the subjects of the course
- to be able to use an appropriate language.
To achieve a score of 30/30 and honors, the student must demonstrate:
- to have acquired an excellent knowledge of the subjects of the course;
- to be able to link them together logically and consistently;
- to be able to use an appropriate language.
Lesson mode
Lessons of frontal didactics and lessons meetings with professionals from the publishing and editorial information.
Practical activities: during the course, exercises are offered in the classroom or at home linked to the analysis of case studies and project work.
Moreover, the professor promotes strong interaction between the students and the teachers during lessons.
