Objectives
Globalization genetates undesirable consequences concerning sustainability and depletion of natural resources. This couse is mainly concerned with the economic rationale at the basis of the current debate on sustainability and environment
It will provide students with a sound knowledge and understanding of the major results of environmental economics. Also, they will be able to apply the fundamentals of microeconomic theory and public economics to problems related to sustainability and ESG.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse issues related to sustainability and the environment, and will be capable of discussing and illustrating their policy implications.

Programme
The course aims at illustrating the notions of the economics of the environment into a theoretical and empirical framework in order to provide students with some relevant tools for the analysis of the effects of the economic choices on the environment.
The course analyzes the notion of the environment as a public good; the problem of negative externalities; the market solution to the environmental externalities (Coase theorem); public intervention, Pigouvian taxation and regulation; the economic growth and international environmental problems; globalization and sustainability; the EU environmental policy.
Morever, students will be provided with
- rationale choice of consumption and production, under the assumption that products are differentiated along an environmental or ethical quality dimension;
-network effects and relative preferences (or other regarding preferences)
-green culture and consumption choice.

Lessons mode
Debate on papers and reports will be developed among different groups of students (for example, on the role of cap and trade or ESG.

The final exam will consist of exercises and applications of the theory. Adequate training will be provided in class.
It is worth remarking that the final exams is devoted to test the ability of the student to apply the knowledge learned in the course.
