Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the regulatory framework and tobacco control policies, as well as of the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of tobacco use. They will be able to explain the mechanisms of nicotine dependence, the toxic effects of substances related to smoking, and the health benefits of cessation. They will have acquired the ability to apply operational models and tools, such as the stages of change and the 5A and 5C approaches, in their interaction with smokers, making appropriate use of communication techniques including Brief Motivational Counseling and both verbal and non-verbal strategies to enhance motivation to change. Students will also be able to critically assess the effectiveness of different prevention and treatment approaches, both motivational and pharmacological, with particular attention to Nicotine Replacement Therapy. Finally, they will be capable of designing integrated intervention pathways that combine communicative, motivational, and pharmacological strategies, thereby contributing to the development of effective public health programs aimed at reducing tobacco use.
Prerequisites
The student enters with foundational knowledge in health sciences and anatomy/physiology of the major systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuro-psychological aspects), enabling a holistic, prevention-oriented approach to care. They understand core public health concepts and social determinants of health, can distinguish levels of prevention (primary, secondary, tertiary), and grasp principles of health promotion. They possess EBP literacy sufficient to frame simple clinical questions, search trusted databases, and critically read guidelines and reviews. They integrate nursing principles with therapeutic education, clinical communication, and essential ethical-legal considerations, working in an interprofessional manner. Finally, they demonstrate basic data literacy to interpret key indicators and translate evidence into measurable care and organizational objectives across practice settings.

Module: TABACCOLOGY AND PREVENTION
The module “Health Sciences and Tobacco Management” aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge, critical analysis skills, and practical tools to understand and effectively address the complexity of tobacco dependence.
Students will begin by acquiring the fundamental concepts related to the issue of tobacco use and the reasons why training in this field is necessary. The international and national regulatory framework will be presented (Framework Convention on Tobacco Control – FCTC, the Italian framework law, and the Sirchia law), along with the principles of the Tobacco Endgame.
Particular attention will be devoted to epidemiological data, traditional and new tobacco products, the mechanisms of nicotine dependence, and the toxic effects of carbon monoxide, carcinogenic substances, and radioactivity. The health risks associated with fine particulate matter (PM) and the benefits of smoking cessation will also be examined. Students will learn to critically interpret epidemiological data and explain the impact of smoking on individual and public health and on social and environmental costs.
The course will guide students in interpreting behavioral change models, especially Prochaska and Di Clemente’s stages of change, and in understanding the dynamics of withdrawal. Practical application of the 5A and 5C approaches will be explored as operational tools in managing smokers.
At the same time, students will develop practical skills in the use of Brief Motivational Counseling and effective communication strategies, both verbal and non-verbal, as fundamental instruments to support adherence to cessation programs.
The course will also provide training in the correct use of evidence based pharmacological treatments, with particular attention to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), focusing on their effectiveness, limitations, and contexts of application, integrating practical schemes and simulations.
Finally, students will be encouraged to critically evaluate prevention and treatment strategies and to design integrated intervention pathways that combine communication, motivational, and pharmacological approaches, with the ultimate goal of contributing actively to public health policies aimed at overcoming tobacco use, and to the promotion of smoke-free environments.
Module: Psychiatric health and prevention
Within the module students are guided to recognise the main areas of mental health and to describe their essential manifestations, to explain the relationships between mental state, behaviours and lifestyles, to apply foundational notions useful to understand common clinical and pharmacological interventions; through brief narrative cases they learn to analyse situations typical of care settings and to evaluate priorities and risk factors using a language shared by the care team; particular attention is devoted to effective communication with patients and families, to promoting adherence to care pathways and to managing safety in clinical environments; by the end of the module students are able to design proportionate operational responses to patient and contextual needs, to justify care choices with clear arguments, and to collaborate with community services to ensure continuity and appropriateness of care.

Lessons mode
Teaching is delivered face-to-face through an integrated approach that combines didactic (lecture-based) and interactive modalities, supported by multimedia presentations, simulated cases, and the critical appraisal of scientific articles. Lecture segments introduce and structure core content using slides, diagrams, and concept maps to build shared theoretical frameworks and foster organized note-taking. Interactive sessions promote applied reasoning through guided questioning, brief small-group discussions, plenary debriefs, and short formative checks. The use of presentations ensures clarity, logical sequencing, and straightforward access to study materials; simulation of clinical-organizational scenarios enables practice of decision-making and risk management in a protected environment, followed by structured debriefing. Journal club activities develop evidence use by guiding students in source selection, synthesis of findings, essential methodological appraisal, and transfer of evidence to practice and organizational contexts.
Frequency
Admission to assessment is conditional upon in-person attendance of no less than two-thirds (66.7%) of the total contact hours. **Remote participation is neither provided for nor countable. Attendance is recorded exclusively via the signature register. No exceptions are permitted.
Exam mode
Assessment is integrated: within the same examination session, the student completes all assessments pertaining to the individual modules and must pass each with at least a satisfactory result. In-term tests or exemptions may be scheduled and contribute to the overall evaluation. The final grade is expressed on a 30-point scale, as an integration of the module results (pass ≥ 18/30); honors are awarded upon a unanimous decision. Admission to the exam is contingent upon in-person attendance of not less than two thirds (≥ 66.7%) of the total course hours. Reasonable accommodations, as well as compensatory tools and dispensations for students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLD), are ensured in accordance with applicable regulations.
Example exam questions
