Learning outcomes
At the end of the internship, students will have developed advanced competencies in critically appraising scientific evidence, synthesizing research findings and translating evidence into clinical, organizational and educational practice. They will be able to assess the methodological quality and risk of bias of primary and secondary studies using internationally validated appraisal tools, critically interpret systematic reviews and meta-analyses, evaluate the certainty of evidence using the GRADE approach and formulate evidence-informed recommendations. Students will integrate research findings with clinical context, patient preferences, organizational sustainability and healthcare priorities, producing a project work demonstrating methodological rigor, scientific autonomy and clinical relevance.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to have successfully achieved the learning outcomes of Internship I, particularly regarding secondary research design, systematic literature searching, scientific literature management and protocol development. Adequate knowledge of clinical research methodology, applied statistics and Evidence-Based Practice is also required.
Programme
The internship focuses on advanced methodologies for critically appraising and synthesizing scientific evidence. Topics include internationally recognized tools for assessing methodological quality and risk of bias in experimental, observational and secondary studies, including AMSTAR 2, ROB 2, ROBINS-I, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, CASP and the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools. Students will explore the methodological principles of meta-analysis, interpretation of effect measures, statistical heterogeneity, sensitivity analyses and publication bias, together with the GRADE approach for assessing the certainty of evidence and the strength of recommendations. Particular emphasis will be placed on evidence implementation models, knowledge translation strategies, identification of barriers and facilitators to organizational change and the development of evidence-informed interventions aimed at improving healthcare quality. The internship concludes with the preparation and discussion of a project work documenting the methodological process and the clinical applicability of the findings.
Books
The primary textbook is Polit D.F. and Beck C.T., Nursing Research: Generating and Assessing Evidence for Nursing Practice, 11th edition, Wolters Kluwer, 2021. Essential references include the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis, the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions, the GRADE Handbook and the most recent international reporting guidelines, including PRISMA 2020, PRISMA-ScR and PRISMA 2020 for Abstracts. Additional methodological papers and up-to-date scientific documents selected by the instructor will be used throughout the internship to further develop competencies in evidence synthesis and implementation science.

Lessons mode
The internship includes critical appraisal of scientific literature, methodological workshops, interpretation of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, application of internationally recognized appraisal tools and progressive development of an individual project work. Regular supervision meetings with faculty members are intended to support critical discussion of evidence, methodological refinement of the project and exploration of the clinical, organizational and research implications of the findings.
Frequency
Attendance is compulsory according to the regulations of the Master's Degree Programme. Active participation in workshops, supervision meetings and scientific discussions represents an essential component of the educational pathway.
Exam mode
Assessment will be based on the presentation and discussion of an individual project consisting of a complete secondary research study. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in critically appraising the methodological quality of included studies, appropriately synthesizing evidence, correctly interpreting statistical findings and formulating recommendations applicable to clinical and organizational practice. The oral discussion will also assess critical thinking, methodological rigor, scientific reasoning and the appropriate use of international scientific terminology.
Example exam questions
During the examination students may be asked to discuss the differences among major methodological quality and risk-of-bias assessment tools, interpret the findings of a meta-analysis and the clinical meaning of effect measures, explain how the GRADE methodology determines the certainty of evidence, discuss the clinical implications of the synthesized findings and justify the recommendations developed on the basis of the best available evidence. Students may also be asked to describe strategies for implementing research evidence into clinical practice and healthcare decision-making.
