The course aims to give a basic information about the romance languages and the romance literatures in the Middle Ages and their legacy. Specific objectives that are meant to be reached are basic skills: for critical comparison between different romance languages; for the correct distinction between factual data and interpretations of phenomena (linguistic, historical, literary); for an adequate analysis of the most ancient documents preserved, moreover literary texts, in the textual (types, formal frames, metric patterns, etc.) and historical-literary aspects (topics, themes, relationships, distribution, etc).

The course is scheduled in the first semester and is addressed to the students of the "Lettere moderne" program of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of ordering 270 and is a prerequisite for the other more advanced teaching units of Filol. and Ling. Romance.

There is no program distinction between attending and non-attending students, the methods of examination are identical.

Attendance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. Students who can not follow the lessons are asked to contact the teacher in any case for explanations and suggestions.

PRE-REQUISITES

Basic knowledge of general linguistics, Italian linguistics, Latin language; school-level knowledge of the history of Europe and the history of Italian literature (overall periodisation, genres, formal types).

PROGRAM

The romance languages and their contemporary presence in the world. Official languages and their birth; dialects and other levels of language in past and present. Evolution from Latin : phonology, morphology, some aspects of syntax. Evolution from Latin and mutual differences among the groups and languages. Oral and written traditions: the implications of literacy. The most ancient romance texts. The beginning of romance literatures: genres, forms, texts, with lecture and explanation of some exemplary extracts. Original characters and legacy up to the Modern Age and beyond.

EVALUATION

Written practice test; Written or oral exam.

Attending students will be subjected to a written test in the form of exemption during the course (or later, with non-attendants), which is essential for oral admission. The test is aimed at assessing the ability to apply at a level of practical analysis the fundamental bases of romance linguistics.

Non-attending students will also have to submit a preliminary written test, equivalent to the exemption of the attending studentes, which will be organized during the course (together with the attendants) and before each exam session (orientation: end of May - Beginning of June, early September, late January).

The overall preparation of the program will be evaluated during oral or written examination. Specific importance will be given to: knowledge of the matters, precision in terminology, control of the general perspective, ability to identify nodal points, to expose the problematic aspects appropriately, to evaluate punctual issues and details preserving the connection with the overall picture, keeping always clear the distinction between facts and their interpretation, to appropriately introduce into the presentation general questions such as those between languages of communication and languages of culture, between orality and writing, between forms and thematic nuclei within literary expression.

The main goal is to give to the students a deeper knowledge of romance languages and literatures in the Middle Ages and of the philological method, through the study of exemplary authors and/or textes and/or research themes and the critical enquiry of pertinent scientific literature. Students will develop new critical skills in the analysis of texts through their formal characters and the comparison between related objects, and moreover acquiring better skills of contrastive analysis on texts, forms, genres, thematic clusters.

The course is scheduled in the second semester and is addressed to the students of the "Lettere moderne" program of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of ordering 270; it has been conceived as a first moment of in-depth analysis of a medieval romance text and is a prerequisite for the other more advanced teaching units of Filol. and Ling. Romance.

Attendance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. Students who can not follow the lessons on an ongoing basis, but are still interested in the program are asked to contact the teacher in any case for explanations and suggestions. However, a totally alternative program is indicated for those who could not attend in any way.

PRE-REQUISITES

Basic knowledge of linguistics and Romance philology (formation of Romance languages and their individual characters, appearance of medieval Romance literature and their distinguishing features), as acquired through the introductory teaching of Fondamenti di filologia e linguistica romanza.

PROGRAM

Around the middle of the 12th century, a group of narrative texts in verse, composed in the Romance language in the north-west of the French domain, presented a new courtly audience with a nucleus of stories and myths dating back to Classical Antiquity and told by important authors. The Roman de Troie, the Roman de Thèbes and the Roman d'Eneas, play a decisive role in the consolidation of stories, initially written in verse, destined to achieve European fortune and to found, starting from certain archetypal nodes, what would later be the narrative of the medieval and then modern West. We will follow the salient features of this nucleus of texts, dwelling in particular on the vision of the ancient world through medieval eyes, an aspect of structural anachronism, and the introduction of amorous themes in line with the taste of the time.

EVALUATION

Written exercises: 1) Written analysis of a portion of text to be agreed with the teacher, including linguistic and philological analysis; 2) synthetic exposure of two of the studies or groups of studies indicated in the bibliography. Oral examination, with translation and commentary of some texts.

Special relevance shall be granted to the skills of critical analysis of the ancient texts, starting from the comprehension of the text (morphology and syntax, lexicon, in particular the components most connected to the courtly tradition), adequately using the manuals and the critical reference bibliography, possibly discussing their settings. Special attention will be given to the ability to correctly contextualize the relevant aspects, with reference to the different cultural and historical conditions in which the texts were composed and received by the public.

Warnings: It is requested the ability to read and comment in the original format least some extracts, to be agreed with the teacher. A part of the bibliography will be compulsorily in a foreign language (English or French, at choice).

The course is aimed at students of master's degrees who already possess basic knowledge of Romance philology and linguistic and intends to present a case-study (an author, a text, a genre ...) of exemplary importance, placing it into the appropriate historical-literary context, highlighting the most relevant philological problems, inserting it in current discussion on the subject.

Specific objectives that are meant to be reached are the acquisition of in-depth expertise and critically evaluated skills around key problems of romance philology; acquisition of a secure methodology of work (critical analysis of the current literature, the ability to work directly out of ancient texts), in relation to the most recent research directions; ability to confront with the current critical literature. Students will develop more advanced critical skills in the analysis of texts through their formal characters and the comparison between related objects, refining the ability of contrastive analysis concerning texts, forms, genres, thematic clusters.

The course is conceived for graduate students of master's degree courses who already possess basic notions of Romance philology; it is essential to attend classes regularly, with active participation in the development of the course, which will last one year (it is otherwise preferable to refer to the program for non-attending students or to contact the teacher for an alternative). Reading the mss. requires the knowledge of elementary principles of paleography or the willingness to acquire them.

The course will be seminar-based and as a whole (12 CFU) will last the whole year. The first semester will be devoted to ancient troubadours and textes, the second to authors of the second half of the 12th Century. The active participation of students will be encouraged. Attendance is therefore strictly compulsory; those who are unable to attend but are nevertheless interested in the contents or intend to sit the exam in any case are invited to contact Prof. Asperti for indications or for an alternative program.

During the year students will be required to prepare an oral public delivery on an assigned theme. In particular, it will be evaluated the student's ability to take into account the texts and themes examined (for literary and historical-literary, philological and linguistic aspects), and to place them in a correct perspective also in relation to current trends in criticism and in literary historiography.
