Programme

The advanced course takes place in the 2nd semester. It aims at resuming and enriching previously acquired knowledge with the deepening of the development of one or more ancient Germanic traditions, by reading, analysing and translating texts from one or more ancient Germanic languages.

Course organisation

Frontal lessons with presentation and discussion of topics also with slideshows or other (multi-medial or traditional) tools (later made available for individual study). Students intervention and questions are strongly encouraged and may stimulate further discussions. At times, participants may be required to actively participate in the lessons.

Expected learning outcomes

After attending the advanced course, students are expected to be able to deal with the proposed topics in more depth and also critically elaborate on them, as for their linguistic, textual, and literary aspects.

Evaluation methods

Individual oral exam (min. 15/20 minutes) with questions on any parts in the program. Besides knowledge of the topics, also communicative skills, usage of the subject terminology and the ability to elaborate on the topics of the course are evaluated. A large part of the exam deals with text analysis and commentary.

Programme

The introductory class aims at providing students with a basic knowledge of the subject, mainly focussing on linguistic and philological aspects of the Germanic languages from their origins to the Middle Ages, as well as on elements of their literature history. Subsequently, a grammatical deepening will allow the participants to read, analyse, and translate one or more texts from the Old English tradition.

Prerequisites

No specific prerequisites are needed. A basic knowledge of Linguistics and/or of any modern Germanic language may be of help in understanding some topics.

Evaluation methods

Individual oral exam (min. 15/20 minutes) with questions on any parts of the programme. Besides knowledge of the topics, also communicative skills, usage of the specific terminology and the ability to elaborate on the topics of the course are evaluated. Quick exercises may be also proposed, to assess the ability to apply theoretical principles on a specific case.

Expected learning outcomes

Providing students with the basic topics and technical terminology of the discipline so to both pass the final exam and autonomously and critically reflect on the proposed subjects, with a view on a possible prosecution at a later level of study.

The advanced course for the 'CdS magistrale in Culture e Religioni' corresponds to the introductory class named "Introduzione alla Filologia Germanica", which takes place in the 1st semester. It aims at providing students with a basic knowledge of the subject, mainly focussing on linguistic and philological aspects of the Germanic languages from their origins to the Middle Ages, as well as on elements of their literature history.
