Alessandra Carattoli, BSc PhD, is Full Professor SSD BIO-19 of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, Department of Molecular Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome.
From 1998 to 2018 she was Research Director at the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. As a molecular microbiologist, she has developed innovative methodologies for the study of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and plasmids that mediate the horizontal transfer of genes conferring resistance. Her methods of identifying and characterizing plasmids in enterobacteria have been adopted by microbiological research and surveillance centers for infectious diseases around the world. She was among the pioneers of bacterial genomics used as a tool for the identification of new resistance mechanisms and for the characterization of high-risk bacterial strains, to improve the control of infectious diseases and counteract the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance in nosocomial and community context.
She is the author of 173 publications in indexed international journals, with more than 20,000 citations and H-index = 70 (Sept 2021).
In 2015 it was included in the Worlds Most Influential Scientific Minds for the Pharmacology and Toxicology category, a ranking of the most cited researchers in the world compiled by ISI-Thompson Reuters. She was included among the Highly Cited Researchers, Top 1% scientists by Clarivate Analytics, Web of Science, in 2016 and 2017 for the Pharmacology & Toxicology category and in 2018 for the Cross-Field category. Following the international awards and recognitions, in 2017 the President of the Italian Republic conferred on her the title of Commendatore Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and in 2019 she was called as full professor for clear fame by the Sapienza University of Rome.
