Recent participation in national and international projects
2010/2015 - Deputy Coordinator - BIOWASTE AND ALGAE KNOWLEDGE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF 2ND GENERATION BIOFUELS (acronym BIOWALK4BIOFUELS), FP7-ENERGY-2009-1-RTD, Collaborative Project, Topic Energy.2009.3.2.2: Biowaste as feedstock for 2nd generation biofuels
Project Abstract
The Project aims to develop an innovative system for the treatment of biowaste and use of GHG emissions to produce biofuels, using macroalgae as a catalyser, in a multidisciplinary approach.
The background project idea, a research and operational initiative, promotes at the same time the following topics:
use of biowaste (sludge from waste water treatment plants, industry, and other types of biowaste, e.g. poultry manure, biowaste from fertilizing and food industry with high nitrogencontent), industrial GHG emissions (to be captured and insufflated in open-ponds), and use of polluted seawater (to avoid consumption of potable water), as a source of nutrients, to maximize algae production and to bio-depurate the industrial area;
use of macroalgae as a strongly renewable and high-yield non-food source of biomass (to avoid food/fuel competition for land use). Macroalgae simplify the recollection of emissions coming from an industrial site and the direct use of biowaste. As well, with macroalgae we can simplify the harvesting process (low energy required and low cost);
pre-cultivation of protoplasts in an incubator to accelerate cell growth;
controlled open-pond cultivation of macroalgae to reduce space required increasing productivity per hectare per year;
The final goal of the process is to be able to treat biowaste with high nitrogen content and use GHG emissions, while producing a purified biogas through anaerobic fermentation of macroalgae. Due to their ability to grow in an environment with high concentrations of nitrogen (to increase productivity) and their high carbohydrate content, macroalgae allow an environmentally friendly and cost-efficient production of biogas.

2009/2013 - Head of Research Unit (DICMA), Sapienza University - SPACE-TIME RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PRODUCTION AND EMISSION OF N2O IN AGROENERGETIC CROPS. PHYTO-REMEDIATION CHARACTERISTICS OF OILSEED CROPS IN SOILS CONTAMINATED WITH HEAVY METALS. PRIN 2009. Financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research
