Program This course aims to provide an overview of the main theoretical-methodological issues and problems related to the “History of Religion(s)” in Europe and in the United States. It will focus on the analysis of issues linked to the definition of the concept of “religion”, in its historical-geographical and cultural declinations, on the problem of the classification of different religious systems in the past and in the present and on their comparison. With reference to the Course of Study (CoS) within which it is included, this course will pay particular attention to contemporary cultural and religious diversity. In particular, it will analyze the concept of “pluralism” and the issues related to this concept in the various fields of contemporary societies.
The main objectives of the course are:
- to analyze the concept of “religion” and how this concept is theorized and developed in different historical-geographical and cultural contexts;
- to examine the various institutions that have characterized the concept of “religion” in the past and the declinations that these institutions have assumed over time, modifying the object to which they refer;
- to study, in a comparative way, how the definition of the concept of “religion” and its classifications have influenced the construction of societies in the past and how they affect the construction of contemporary ones.

Program
The module “Narratives of Religious Freedom and Discrimination” aims to analyze the historical, geographical, cultural, social, political and legal developments of the concept of religious freedom across time and space. This concept will be examined with a specific focus on (forms of) discrimination of ethnic and religious individuals and groups in ancient and contemporary societies around the world. This will be done by taking into account the concept of “narrative” and the process of its production.
The main goals of this module are:
- to define the concept of “narrative” and analyze how it is constructed in relation to the concepts of religious freedom and discrimination;
- to examine how religious freedom is theorized and to approach its theoretical and practical framework critically;
- to study the different aspects of discrimination and how they are theorized and implemented.
This module will examine the main topics which characterize the concept of religious freedom and discrimination by adopting a Religious Studies perspective and an integrated approach. Through the analysis of chosen case studies and individual and group exercises, this module will provide students with the main theoretical and methodological tools to approach narratives, their agents, and the concepts of religious freedom and discrimination.
