All the research areas which I have mentioned for the project are the development of my personal research trajectory while at the same time extending beyond it. A serie of monographs attest my scientific career in several fields of Romance Philology: autorial philology with the lyrics of the troubadour Raimon Gaucelm de Béziers (my BA thesis) and the study of literary genres such the extant medieval provençal dansas (dance-songs); codex or material philology, with the study of the structure of troubadour manuscripts C (Paris, BnF, fr. 856); finally, consideration of reader philology and the reception history of a work such as the History of Barlam and Josaphat in very different, even clashing contexts from those that have produced it (it is the story of Christianized Buddha). The diverse but intertwined threads of my ten years research may be summarised as follows. Provençal studies are my primary area of academic expertise. Both my master s and doctoral dissertations concerned different aspects of Provençal literature and medieval Romance poetry as an essential part of Europe s cultural heritage. For this reason I have published widely on troubadour lyric poetry, including in the framework of funded programs. I have been fortunate to be a research assistant and consultant in two AHRC projects: on the corpus of troubadour dialogue poems and on crusade Occitan and Old French songs. Working collaboratively throughout with the two of the most eminent medieval philological and historical British scholars, taught me what is teamwork and how to lead an outstanding project. These experiences inspire me to want to lead a team of people and to drive forward a major project. Several collateral areas of interest have also appeared at different stages of my academic career and are playing an important role in my research, providing material and inspiration for theoretical elaboration. The international collaborations and exchanges led me to engage in genuinely interdisciplinary enquiry when I began extensive teaching activities in Romance philology in the curriculum of Medieval Musicology at the Sapienza Università di Roma. An approach informed by philology, musicology and palaeography, both textual and musical, has occupied a growing place among my reasearch priorities since 2015. My philological background gave me the skills required to analyse melodic neumes in new ways. I combined Romance philology and palaeographical expertise in investigating the special marriage of medieval poetry and profane monody in a copy of an anonymous crusade song written on what was originally a loose piece of bifolio parchment inserted into the end of British Library ms. Harley 1717 (the English translation has been published in Literature of the Crusades, Cambridge, D.S. Brewer, 2018). Its apparently normal features of 12th-century continental documentary script, and its melodic notation allowed me to identify and date to the late 12th century an important source, one of the earliest extant exemplars of neumatic notation in a Romance vernacular song. Comparative literature is the core of Romance Philology, so emphasizing the importance of medieval Catalan culture and the common Romance heritage is the focus of my recent studies on the marginal manuscript transmission of the corpus of 14th-century notarial rhymes of Castelló d Empúries (forthcoming in La Réception des Troubadours en Catalogne, Brepols Publishers, Turnhout, 2019). The connection between Italian pre-humanism and late Occitano-Catalan culture added a new dimension to the lyrics on this period. Finally, a consistent part of my research is the reconstruction of the cultural and social context in which a work is produced, focusing on its context, social processes and patronage patterns. From this perspective, I have recently been working on MS Paris, BnF, f. fr. 1049 and its historical and devotional texts, in particular the occitan Somme le Roi and the Libre de Barlam et Josaphat. The intellectual transmission of a legend from an Indian Buddhist context to an European Christian one is of central importance, for the legend can be considered paradigm of cultural and religious East-West transfer. The book I wrote (2016) is a truly interdisciplinary work, where my research methods include investigating various types of primary sources, from textual to iconographic and musical, that range from the late 13th to the 14th-century. Equally importantly, I also focus on the material culture of the manuscript, for example the marginal scripts, signs of ownership and reception, and their literary implications, essential for a comprehensive interpretation of its transmission and reception. The historicist perspective adopted in this study led me to deepen the religious and political history of the Occitan and Italian 14th-century (particularly that of the Spiritual Franciscans and the Angevins, as in my recent article in Lecturae tropatorum 2018) and the novel view on the Franciscan reception of Barlaam/Buddha in this period (an examination of the circulation of the legend among the Beguins, has been published in Cultura Neolatina 2017), has been enjoyed a very positive reception. Soon after its publication in May 2016 the book was reviewed in July by the Vatican official organ L Osservatore Romano ( Quando Buddha si fece Francescano , by Paolo Vian, Director of the Manuscript Department of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana) and in August by a RAI (Italian Radio and Television) radio programme. Since then my book has been internationally recognized, quoted several times and presented by important researchers in the field and in prestigious locations. In my master s lectures in medieval Linguistics and Musicology I always try to seek out challenging research questions and develop rigorous, original ideas. Every year I have achieved high standards in student questionaires in my faculty at La Sapienza, from both the teaching and scientific points of view.
