Scientific activity
The research activity is mainly focused on several aspects of the chromosome biology in Drosophila melanogaster such as:
1) structure and function of pericentromeric and telomeric heterochromatin
2) genetical and functional interaction between euchromatin and heterochromatin
3) epigenetic control of gene expression and centromere
4) the genomic organization of the transposable elements and the regulation of their activity in relation to environmental stress and evolutionary processes.
For this type of study, Drosophila melanogaster was used as a model organism.
The last results of these studies can be summarized as: a) the identification of Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1) as the first protein involved in telomere capping; b) the discovery that HP1 is involved also in positive regulation of gene expression; c) the identification of some proteins involved in both epigenetical regulation of euchromatic genes and heterochromatin formation; d) the discovery of a new evolutive mechanism involving transposable elements as a cause of phenotipical variation.
Such activity produced more then 50 publications on international journals with referees and 6 chapters in technical manuals edited by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory press and The Humana Press Inc.
