My research profile

I am a plant molecular ecologist with a passion for ancient DNA studies. I am interested in studying how organisms, especially plants, adapted in response to climate change. In my group we also identify species from ancient subtrates like lake sedimentscultural heritage materials (statues, manuscripts, herbarium material)  to characterise samples important for historical, archeological and ecological reconstructions. We use also modern DNA from contemporary plant populations to understand their current genetic relationships and history. For our taxonomic identifications we use molecular techniques based on DNA metabarcoding & shotgun metagenomics.

I like also to use #Art to outreach in #Science; see some examples on my personal homepage here.

Since 1994 I have worked in Sweden at Uppsala University and from November 2019 I returned to Italy where I am Associate Professor at Sapienza University of Rome. I have a BSc/MSc degree (1991) in Agricultural Sciences, a PhD (2000) in Forest Genetics and a Swedish 'Docentur' (2012) in Plant Ecology.

Plant biogeography (phytogeography) is a very broad discipline in its content, which uses and tries to synthesize disciplines that are different from each other: • Systematics - classification and nomenclature of plants based on a phylogenetic-systematic (cladistic) approach• Plant Ecology• Evolution• Reproductive Biology of Plants (important for settlement and dispersion) • Genetics: the basic rules• Geology and Earth History• Paleoecology • Climatology • Geography.

TOPICS OF THE LESSONS (the order of the topics may vary)

• Introduction to the course and the discipline of Biogeography• Climate and vegetation in the world• Main biomes: Mediterranean, tropical, savanna, desert, temperate forest, temperate rainforest, boreal forest and tundra, temperate grasslands• Geological times and plate tectonics• Tree-thinking• Evolution• Vicariance, disjunction, dispersion, endemisms and extinction• Distribution models and main disjunctions• Species / area conservation.

SISTEMATICA E CONSERVAZIONE DELLA FLORA 1019204 2022/2023

Systematics and conservation of flora is a theoretical-practical course that explores the evolutionary and conservation aspects of the diversity of terrestrial plants in the context of the natural history. It addresses the existing plant diversity from a systematic, phylogenetic and biogeographical point of view and provides the tools and methods to identify and describe plant species, understand their distribution on earth and identify their position in the phylogeny of terrestrial plants. The course also provides basic knowledge of the theory of conservation strategies, enhancement and sustainable use of plant resources with particular reference to the flora of Italy.

TOPICS of the LESSONS
• Generalities about plant biodiversity and evolutionary trends • Phylogenetic relationships in the main groups of vascular plants • Types of diversity: alpha, beta, gamma • Principles of molecular ecology, traditional and molecular paleoecology • Vegetable dynamism • Main orders, families and genera of Monocotyledons and Dicotyledons • Essential tools for the recognition of the main groups of plants and in particular of the species indicative of the Mediterranean vascular flora • Notes of phytosociology • Use of analytical keys for the determination of the most characteristic species of the Italian vascular flora • Conventions on the protection of plant biodiversity and notes on the regulatory framework (EU Habitat Directive) • Loss of habitat and species extinction • Red lists of threatened flora • In situ and ex situ conservation strategies • Protected areas, botanical gardens, germplasm banks, herbaria • Regional examples of measures taken for the in situ and ex situ conservation of species at risk of extinction • Preparation of a herbarium.

ADVANCED BIOLOGICAL METHODS APPLIED TO CULTURAL HERITAGE 10596255 2022/2023

This course offers students the conceptual and methodological tools to apply biological research to cultural heritage. Upon completing the course, students will be able to identify the biological elements of artworks, the biological agents causing their deterioration, and the strategies for conserving cultural heritage. Through the use of both traditional and more advanced techniques, such as metabarcoding and metagenomics of both modern and ancient DNA, students will gain an understanding of the advanced biological methods used to study the deterioration of artworks, reconstruct paleoenvironments, and explore human impacts on them.

SISTEMATICA E CONSERVAZIONE DELLA FLORA 1019204 2021/2022

Systematics and conservation of plant diversity is a theoretical-practical course that explores the evolutionary and conservative aspects of the diversity of terrestrial plants in the context of the natural history of the earth. It deals with plant diversity from a systematic, phylogenetic and biogeographical point of view and provides the tools and methods to be able to define and describe plant species, understand their distribution on the planet and define their position in the phylogeny of terrestrial plants. The course also provides a basic knowledge of the theory of conservation strategies, enhancement and sustainable use of plant resources with particular reference to the flora of Italy.

FITOGEOGRAFIA 1041381 2021/2022

This course examines the distribution patterns of plants on Earth and the factors that influence their geographical distribution. We will study together the similarities of plant communities in different parts of the world, as well as the distribution patterns of individual taxa. We will discuss the methods used by science to investigate the history and evolution of plants, we will understand the causes of changes in the areas over time and we will learn to understand possible developments in relation to future climate changes. We will do two botanical excursions to understand and see what we learned together during the course.

ADVANCED BIOLOGICAL METHODS APPLIED TO CULTURAL HERITAGE 10596255 2021/2022

The course will provide students with the conceptual and methodological tools for applying biological analyzes to cultural heritage. At the end of the course the students will learn to identify the biological materials that make up the works of art, the biological agents that deteriorate the works of art and the strategies for the conservation of cultural heritage. Through the use of traditional and more advanced techniques, such as the use of ancient DNA, students will learn to reconstruct paleoenvironments and investigate the human impact on them.
