Objectives

The course aims to prepare high level professionals in the field of knowledge and analysis of production and consumption behaviours of audiences, with particular attention to the phenomena of audience engagement and audience labour in digital platforms’ environment. More specifically, the course will prepare a professional able to work in different sectors of media industries. Students will be able to apply theoretical and practical knowledge on multiscreen audiences in order to design specific tools for analyzing audience practices and behaviors, oriented at media consumption, content production and participation.

Dublin 1
As a result of the module AUDIENCE STUDIES, students have a general knowledge of theories related to cultural studies and audience studies, with a specific focus on 1) theories aimed at framing the new consumption and production behaviors of multi-screen audiences; 2) understanding, framing and analysis of the cultural practices they express both in terms of fandom (related to specific media content) and participation (related to public/social/political campaign phenomena, networked activism’s cases and branded content aimed at specific segments of audience).
As a result of the module LABORATORIO DI AUDIENCE RESEARCH, students have a general knowledge of methods and tools to be used in order to analyze audiences’ characteristics, and their consumption behaviors.

Dublin 2
As a result of the module AUDIENCE STUDIES, student are able to produce autonomous readings and reflections about the audiences’ productive and consumption behaviours, and apply their knowledge to the analysis of specific media environments.
As a result of the module LABORATORIO DI AUDIENCE RESEARCH, students are able to design systematic observation of audiences’ behaviors with a specific focus on how multi-screen audiences relate to video contents.

Dublin 3
As a result of public debate on scientific paper that are requested in the module AUDIENCE STUDIES, students are able to formulate original judgements about scientific products (evaluate the trustworthiness of scientific sources, consider moral and ethical implication of research on audience, etc), and are able to potentially contribute to the theoretical debate on multi-screen audiences.
As a result of projects works requested in the module LABORATORIO DI AUDIENCE RESEARCH, students are able to critically evaluate the theoretical and methodological choices related to the design of a scientific and marketing-oriented observation of audiences’ behaviors.

Dublin 4
As a result of public debate on scientific paper that are requested in the module AUDIENCE STUDIES, students are able to communicate their analysis clearly and unambiguously, as the discussion is based on public speaking advices provided by the teacher.
As a result of projects works requested in the module LABORATORIO DI AUDIENCE RESEARCH, students are able to communicate their ideas, in a public speaking style that is strongly related to enterprise communication strategies.

Dublin 5
As a result of the module AUDIENCE STUDIES, students are able to continue to study in a manner that is largely self-directed because they have been provided with concrete examples of how to organize theoretical materials (as in the case of public discussion of scientific papers).
As a result of the module LABORATORIO DI AUDIENCE RESEARCH, students are able to autonomously design experimental tools to be used for analyzing audiences characteristics and behaviors. The project work requested allows students to acquire a detailed understanding of the work-flow needed to design a systematic observation of users’ behaviors.
