BMSM 1
By the end of the course, the student should
▪ have acquired a method and learned appropriate knowledge towards a theoretical and practical background based on scientific bases and human relationships. The student should know the main stages of the evolution of medical thought, including a multicultural perspective. The student should know the origins, evolution, and current uses of the main terms in medicine and be able to explain their conceptual implications. The student
should be aware of the variability inherent in biological, clinical, and instrumental data and the usefulness of statistical methodology for the synthesis and understanding of biomedical phenomena.
▪ be able to establish collaboration with different professionals in group work, respecting the various autonomies. The student should use precise and appropriate medical terminology for better understanding and data transmission. The student should correctly apply methods for gathering and recording information; be able to discuss quantitative methods in medicine and the measurement of biological phenomena; and be able to use statistical, probabilistic, and data-processing instruments to manage the uncertainty inherent in the medical process.
▪ know how to establish a therapeutic alliance with the patient and be able to apply the principle of “caring for”. The student should establish relationships with the patient, relatives, and personnel involved in the patient's care, as well as with other colleagues involved in the diagnostic-therapeutic program.

BMSM 2
The course aims to provide the student with the knowledge for:
● using appropriate methodology to evaluate and interpret the main socio-health indicators; knowing health and demographic indicators,
demographic and epidemiology transitions; understanding and interpreting basic epidemiology, measures of disease frequency and association,
cause-and-effect relationship, prevention;
● recognizing and countering threats to public health, particularly tobacco;
● preventing ill-health and premature death; do prevention (primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary);
● understanding the usefulness of psychology in the medical field, knowing the history of psychology, the research methods, and the adaptiveness of behaviour, the basic processes of learning, memory, the implications for communication with patients, cognitive decline, thought, and systematic biases in our reasoning, with implications for the medical context;
● knowing determinants of relationships between doctors, other health professionals, patients, and fundamentals of responsibility in medical practice and in research, informed consent in medicine, and in research, knowing the basic issues of health and safety at the workplace, being able to read critically and use published observational studies;
● improving knowledge, oral and written communication skills in the English scientific language, expanding the lexicon in the medical field, elaborating technical glossaries, texts, and reports, oral and written presentations; knowing bibliographic research methods;
● knowing elements of interpersonal, professional, and Public Speaking

BMSM2:
The course provides the basic elements of hygiene and epidemiology for health promotion, deepening the knowledge of some of the main socio-health and demographic indicators. The course provides the basic knowledge of descriptive and analytical epidemiology (frequency
and association measures), the cause-effect relationship, prevention, the main study designs (both experimental and observational), main biases (information and selection bias), and confounding. It also explores two one important issues that threatens health: tobacco.

Health and safety at the workplace – the communication process between doctors and patients – the informed consent as a tool for a good therapeutic relationship – the PRECEDE / PROCEED model to plan an educational campaign – the use of the Newcastle-Ottawa scale for the methodological assessment of the quality of observational studies.

In the Psychology module The following topics will be examined:
1. Why should medical students study some Psychology. Introduction to Psychology
2. Improving study Skills: Suggestions from Cognitive Psychology
3. The history of Psychology.
4. Research methods in Psychology.
5. The adaptiveness of behaviour: genetic and evolutionary foundations of behaviour.
6. The adaptiveness of behaviour: Basic processes of learning.
7. Sensation & Perception
8. Memory: short-term, working memory, declarative and non-declarative memory. Implications for communication with patients. Cognitive
decline.
9. Intelligence and Reasoning: Cognitive Errors and Biases in Clinical Reasoning
10. Language and Communication

In the Scientific English module:
1. Anatomy of a scientific paper. The students will learn how to navigate across the different scientific journals and articles, focusing on research papers having a medical-clinical topic. After an orientation on the knowledge of bibliographic research methods database (e.g. Medline) and metrics (citations, impact factor), frontal lessons will be focused on understanding the structure of a manuscript (e.g. IMRAD), emphasis will be given to the interpretation of figures and results, including graphical abstract, charts and plots describing results and statistics. Lessons aim to deepen analyze scientific texts and develop the ability of critical reading of a scientific paper.
2. Graphical Abstract. In this team work activity, students will first read, interpret and discuss a scientific paper, and then they will test their skills
in elaborating scientific knowledge by creating a graphical abstract. This section will be concluded by a graphical abstract contest, where the students will vote for the best work.
3. Scientific communication at conferences. Students will be trained on how to deliver a talk to the scientific audience. Groups of 4-5 students will choose an article that will be presented in the form of a 15-minutes talk. Students will learn how to communicate effectively in a short time frame to their peers. Discussion will be chaired by the students.
