Giulia Capotorti is an associated professor in applied and environmental botany at the Dep. of Environmental Biology of the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy). Her research activity focuses on the ecological classification of land and on investigation and sustainable management of plant diversity. She deals with the analysis, ecological assessment, monitoring and conservation of flora, vegetation, ecosystems and landscapes in different geographic contexts and at different scales, including protected areas as well as rural systems and urban and peri-urban areas. Her expertise embraces: i) the recognition and monitoring of plant diversity at the species, ecosystem and landscape level; ii) the integrated collection, analysis, mapping and modelling of biological and physical information; iii) the ecological classification of land into ecoregions and biophysical land units; iv) the analysis and ecological assessment of land use- land cover changes, v) the mapping and assessment of ecosystems, ecosystem conservation status and ecosystem services; vi) the definition of plant diversity restoration and conservation priorities; and vii) the interdisciplinary cooperation in territorial and environmental sustainable planning. She has been involved in applied research projects supported by local authorities, by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, by the Ministry of University Research, by the Sapienza University of Rome, and by the European Parliament. In particular, she contributed with ecological investigation to the definition and sustainable implementation of masterplans, ecological networks, urban biosphere reserve, and green infrastructures at the city/provincial level, to the assessment of conservation status and valuation of the natural capital for protected areas and for the whole country as well as to the implementation of both the national and the EU Biodiversity Strategies in Italy. At present, she is the scientific coordinator of the Sapienza team involved in the PNRR project on Urban Biodiversity within the activities of the National Biodiversity Future Center. From 2014 to 2021 she joined the European Commission Working Groups on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) and on Green Infrastructure Implementation and Restoration (GIIR) and provided scientific support for the assessment of the national Natural Capital from 2017 to date and has been involved, with other Italian delegates from ISTAT and ISPRA, in the European Task Force on Ecosystem Accounting for the implementation of the SEEA EA in Europe and at the national level. Besides conducting peer reviews for several international journals, she is Subject Editor for the journals Plant Biosystems (Taylor & Francis) and Annali di Botanica (ROSA) and served as Guest Editor for the journals Sustainability (MDPI; 2017-2020), Land (MDPI; 2021-2023), and Frontiers In Environmental Science (2022-to date). She is author of 37 papers of international interest, 9 papers of national interest and different articles in books /reports /monographs. She started her teaching activity for different University courses in 2008.
