Part VII Research Activities
Keywords: Consumers and Firms.
Some of my papers are concerned with the interaction between consumers and firms when markets are not perfectly competitive. For example, I examine firms behaviour when products are differentiated along an environmental quality dimension. Also, I investigate the choice of consumption when consumers are not only bounded by a budget constraint but are also affected by the desire to get a social position in the community where they live. This latter component of my analysis is somehow related to the idea of conspicuous consumption (Veblen). In a different strand of research, in an oligopoly, I consider when firms have the incentive to choose brand proliferation to meet consumers demand thereby preserving their market share.
Keywords: Growth and public/regional policies
Some of my papers are concerned with competition in open economies, when firms are allowed to export or invest via FDI. My main goal is to verify how public policies affects the optimal choice of quality of exported goods and/or the environmental damage determined by exports. Examples of these policies are: technological subsidies, campaigns generating green persuasion and minimum quality standards. Two of my papers are concerned with Regional Policy effects from an empirical viewpoint. The analysis is developed through a non-experimental comparison group method, the regression discontinuity design, and a novel regional dataset for the 1994 2006 period. We find a positive impact of EU Regional Policy on economic growth.
Keywords: International Economics, migration and institutions
Some of my papers are concerned with tax competition between asymmetric jurisdictions. They analyses the effect of the interplay between tax competition and pollution competition to attract firms in a sequential game, or consider labor migration flows between two countries (regions) with different-sized populations and different levels of productive efficiencies to determine the effects of such flows on income taxation. In a more recent approach, I investigate how tax competition changes when the Government chooses taxes and environmental standards, while taking into account the environmental goals pursued by the European Green Deal.
