Riccardo Capoferro (Ph.D., M.A., Rutgers) has published books and articles on eighteenth-century fiction, in particular on the novel and on what we now call the fantastic. Focusing on authors such as Behn, Aubin, Defoe, Swift, Richardson, and Austen, he has looked, in particular, at the relation between cultural and formal changes, from the combined viewpoints of social history, intellectual history and narrative analysis. He has also worked on Joseph Conrad s oeuvre and its long-term impact: he has published many articles on the afterlives and the reception of "Heart of Darkness", as well as interpretations of "The Shadow-Line" and "A Personal Record". In a comparative perspective, he has investigated the influence of British literature on key twentieth-century Italian authors such as Primo Levi, Gianni Celati, Italo Calvino, and Hugo Pratt. He is currently preparing a monograph on "Lord Jim" and a study on the afterlives of "Heart of Darkness" across media and cultures. He is interested in the theory of the novel, narratology, theories of interpretation, and in all questions of method.
