DESIGN AND GRAPHIC LANGUAGES STUDIO 10596168 2023/2024

The main objective of the module is to learn and experiment with different graphic methods related to the images and aimed at communication. The communication domain is extraordinarily varied and wide-ranging, with infinite possible declinations in multiple areas of application. The primary and most used, but not exclusive, tools of project communication work on visual perception, which is currently the most stimulated sensory aspect. Texts, images, and videos create, through a careful integration, specific narrative paths with definite purposes. In recent years, the image has become the primary means of communication for its characteristics of immediacy, synthesis, accessibility, involvement. The videos themselves may be considered "moving images," structured according to specific narrative paths that find their main characteristic in time and space variation. The course aims to analyse the images in their main components and derivations. This approach will allow managing and controlling the whole image path, from creation to processing and development according to a narrative path, increasing the knowledge about images as a project instrument to describe reality. Four topics will be developed: images as a tool for the analysis of reality, images as a means for the construction of models like reality, images as a virtual product of parallel digital realities, images as a door to deeper information that goes beyond the image itself. These four declinations will be tested within a single thematic project path, creating integrated visual storytelling, and highlighting the image capacities for more effective communication of the narrative theme.

Lessons: Every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Classroom B7, Piazza Borghese, second floor)

First day of class: 04 October 2023

LABORATORY OF VIRTUAL MODELLING AND REPRESENTATION 10606409 2023/2024

The main objective of the module is to experiment the complex 3D modelling process of design products from the geometrical and representation point of view. Starting from the sketch of the project, the idea is refined through increasingly detailed drawings, up to the technical executive representation. This defines the main communication tool of the project between the designer and his producer, so it requires a formal and regulatory correctness. But this structured drawing also represents the starting point for the construction of 3D models with increasing geometric complexity, up to the definition of reality-based 3D models, from which realistic, immersive or functional images, 3D prints and Augmented Reality visualization can be extracted. Inversely to this process, always structured within the design workflow, there is the process of reverse modeling, understood as the translation of an existing product in its digital copy, starting for the design intervention on the existing. The drawing becomes the means of creation of the design product, while the representation assumes the dual role of prefiguration of the idea and virtual window of reality. During the course students will learn how to manage the models listed above, acquiring the ability to control the dual path of design, from real to virtual and back. In this context, the differences between the representations for the project and for the survey, the scales of representation and the levels of accuracy in the representation and modeling will be investigated.
