Career
He graduated in Medicine at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in July 1995, magna cum laude. He completed School of Specialization in Dermatology in November 1999.
Appointed Assistant Professor from the 1st of November 2000 at the Department of Dermatology, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Appointed Associate Professor from the 30th of December 2004 at the Department of Dermatology, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Appointed Full Professor from the 1st of November 2007 at the Department of Dermatology, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

Research field
He practices research mainly in the field of dermato-oncology, non invasive diagnosis, cutaneous physiopathology, skin bio-engineering for the evaluation of inflammatory diseases, since 1995. In particular, melanoma and pigmented skin lesions, their early identification by means of dermoscopy in combination with system for image analysis and automated diagnosis, and in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy for the study of cytological and architectural aspects of the skin and of skin lesions, in correlation with dermoscopy and histopathology are the present and most relevant fields of research. Since 2003, his main research interest is in the field of in vivo confocal microscopy for the diagnosis and characterization mostly of skin cancer. Melanoma features have been described and validated. Histopathology correlation, immuno-histochemistry for identification of bio-markers and genetics for characterization of familial syndromes and somatic mutations related with different tumor aspects and aggressiveness represent other areas of research. Moreover, the application of new technologies integrated with other imaging modalities, including optical coherence tomography and speckle variance tomography, has been developed.

Relevant Projects
He participated at several projects funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Education (1999, 2001, 2002, 2004), and in 2007 was Principal Investigator in the Italy-USA project for oncoproteomics supported by the ISS (Superior Institution for Health, Italy). From 2008 to 2012 he took part in the European Project (VII Framework Program for the Research and Technological Development of the European Union), as Principal Investigator from 2011, based on the development and applications of Multiphoton Microscopy. From 2007 to 2012 he acted as long-term expert in the European Social Fund granted project POSDRU, n. 56/1.2/S/31081, for the development of dermato-oncology as integrated line of medical higher education studies and of a network Universities in the field.

Principal Investigator and study coordinator for the project funded by the Ministery of Health NET2011 (2016-2019), on the implementation of confocal microscopy in a regional hospital network.
Local Principal Investigator for 2 European Projects (2014-2017) ICT PSP seventh call 2013, respectively titled: DIAGNOPTICS Diagnosis of skin cancer using optics , and ADVANCE - Automatic Detection of VAscular Networks for Cancer Evaluation , focused on development of multimodal imaging systems and dynamic (speckle-variance) optical coherence tomography, respectively.
Principal Investigator and study coordinator for a grant from Italian Ministry of University and Education for project PRIN-2012 (Projects of National Relevance) (2015-2019) on integration of imaging, molecular and genetic technologies for characterization of melanoma subtypes.
Principal Investigator and study coordinator for a grant from Italian Ministry of Health: NET2011 (2016-2019), on confocal microscopy integration in a regional hospital network.
