Brief Description
The core of research activities focuses on different aspects of atrophic gastritis ranging
from diagnosis, management, follow-up and risk factors of patients affected by this
precancerous condition. Amongst these items, specific research questions have been
addressed, first of all the risk of gastric neoplasms, as intestinal-type adenocarcinoma and
type 1 gastric neuroendocrine tumors, at long-term follow-up, and specific risk factors for
the development of these neoplasms, in particular the presence of gastric dysplasia, gastric
polyps, intestinal metaplasia and its topographic distribution within the stomach as well
the role of Helicobacter pylori infection. Another main issue of research activity is pernicious
anemia as clinical manifestation of late stage atrophic gastritis leading to cobalamin
deficiency and its not clearly defined risk of gastric neoplasms, but also as clinical
manifestation of autoimmune gastritis and its conflicting relationship to Helicobacter pylori
infection as well the the role of dysbiosis of the gastric microbiota. Further fields of
research are celiac disease and malabsorption as well as diverticular disease and
probiotics.
