Programma:
Dimensioni filosofiche dell’eros: il 'Simposio' di Platone.
Dopo una presentazione generale del clima filosofico proprio dell’Atene del V sec. a.C., con particolare attenzione dedicata al pensiero dei Sofisti, di Socrate e naturalmente di Platone (8 ore) e dopo una rapida panoramica dedicata alle dottrine antiche (anche non strettamente filosofiche) sulla figura di Eros (4 ore), il corso si concentrerà sulla lettura e sul commento puntuale del 'Simposio' di Platone. L’analisi del peculiare approccio di Platone non solo alla forma del simposio, ma anche e soprattutto a una serie di declinazioni diverse del peso e del valore di eros, metterà capo all’individuazione della soluzione propriamente platonica, incentrata sul percorso filosofico che porta alle idee e corroborato da una rilettura ‘rivoluzionaria’ della figura di Socrate (in totale: 22 ore). Per evidenziare la genuina fisionomia della soluzione platonica saranno prese in esame anche alcune interpretazioni cruciali avanzate da vari studiosi (anche con relazioni individuali dei partecipanti: 8 ore).
(The philosophical dimensions of Eros: Plato’s 'Symposium'.
After a general overview of the philosophical climate of 5th-century BC Athens, with particular attention paid to the Sophists, Socrates and, of course, Plato (8 hours), and after a brief survey of ancient doctrines (including those not strictly philosophical) concerning the figure of Eros (4 hours), the course will focus on the close reading and detailed commentary of Plato’s 'Symposium'. The analysis of Plato’s distinctive approach not only to the form of the symposium, but also and above all to a series of different interpretations of the significance and value of Eros, will lead to the identification of the specifically Platonic solution, centered on the philosophical path leading to the Forms and corroborated by a ‘revolutionary’ reinterpretation of the figure of Socrates (total: 22 hours). To highlight the true nature of the Platonic solution, we will also examine some crucial interpretations put forward by various scholars (also thanks to individual presentations by participants: 8 hours).

Emidio Spinelli is currently Full Professor at "Sapienza"-Università di Roma (‘History of Ancient Philosophy‘-Department of Philosophy), and Vice-Rector for Right to Study and Didactic Quality at the same University; he has also been Vice-Dean of The Faculty of ‘Lettere e Filosofia’ (2016-2021).
