Francesco Cioffi s areas of expertise are experimental hydraulics (laboratory and field velocity and turbulence measurements), environmental hydraulics (hydraulic and water quality mathematical models, solid transport models) and, applied hydrology (floods/droughts vs. climate changes). At present he is working on rainfall pattern changes in Europe and USA in the last Century, statistical downscaling methodologies for projections of rainfall, temperature and sea level in coastal areas under global warming scenarios, statistical forecast models for Tropical Cyclone rainfall and flood events for the Hudson River.
In the past, he has collaborated on over a dozen projects funded by Italian public institutions. These projects have concerned a number of research subjects including: control and management of erosion phenomena in coastal zones; inshore and off shore aquaculture plants; recovery and management of water quality of lagoons, rivers and lakes: control of tidal phenomena in the Venice lagoon; the management of solid transport in river and reservoirs.
Specifically, the research activity of Dr. Francesco Cioffi has concerned the following subjects:
Models for the optimum management of agriculture water resource
Laboratory experimental analysis of tip vortex downstream a wing
Experimental analysis of transport, diffusion and sedimentation phenomena in turbulent flows
Mathematical models for the simulation of coastal dynamics
Hydrodynamic and water quality models for the analysis of pollution and eutrophication in rivers, lake, lagoons and coastal zones
Analysis by model of optimum management of hyperintensive aquaculture plants
Analysis by laboratory experiments and mathematical models of wind driven flows
Laboratory experiments by LDA ( Laser Doppler Anemometry) for the study of free surface-vorticity interactions in an open channel
Field measurements of turbulence in a lagoon by ADV ( Acustic Doppler Velocimetry)
