The timetable is susceptible to changes due to possible superposition with other courses.

Starting Date
The course will start on September 25th 2023. The first lecture will just be an introduction to the course; we shall use to get to know each other, to arrange the course and to solve technical/didactic problems.

Slides
Generally, the slides used during a lectures will be published before the lecture takes place (day before) in pdf format on the Google Classroom of the course

E-Learning Portal (Moodle)
The course will also make use of the SAPIENZA e-learning portal. You can connect to the Biophotonics Laboratory course page by the link:
https://elearning.uniroma1.it/course/view.php?id=11733
The first time you connect you'll be asked to register by using your SAPIENZA email. The e-learning portal will be used to handle the exams, the videos of the lectures and others.

Laboratory Sessions
During the course, there will be some laboratory work that will be held on:
Thursday 8:00am – 12:00am Location to be defined from time to time.
The dates of the laboratory sessions will be communicated during the course.
The students will be requested to file individual reports on their laboratory work (max 5 pages). The reports will be evaluated and receive a mark. Students with a mark that is not sufficient for some of the lab reports will not be admitted to the final exam.

Topics of the laboratory sessions
The laboratory sessions will devoted to:
Lab Session 1 (Dipartimento SBAI - Dr. Occhicone): Laboratory practice with Snell laws; measurement of the refractive index of a liquid; practice with lenses and mirrors.

Lab Session 2 (Dipartimento SBAI - Dr. Occhicone): Laboratory practice with Fresnel laws; measurement with the remote ellipsometer available in the didactic laboratories of the SBAI Dept.

Lab Session 3 (Dipartimento SBAI - Dr. Occhicone, Prof. Petrucci): Absorption spectroscopy in alcoholic and water solutions of selected organic molecules.

Lab Session 4 (Dipartimento SBAI - Dr. Occhicone): CW fluorescence spectroscopy in alcoholic and water solutions of selected organic molecules.

(IIT – Nanolife Sciences - Dott. S. De Panfilis and in collaboration with Dipartimento di Biologia Molecolare C.Darwin – Dott.ssa A. Cirigliano): Use of a wide-field and confocal fluorescence microscope to study yeast cells labelled with DAPI, GFP, RFP.

Alternatively

(Ospedale Pediatico Bambino Gesù, Facility di microscopia di fluorescenza - Dott. S.Petrini): Use of a wide-field and confocal fluorescence microscope to study yeast cells labelled with DAPI, GFP, RFP.

Lab session 6 (Dipartimento SBAI - Dr. Occhicone): Measurement of the SPP resonance in ATR regime; Resonance shift due to the injection of several different liquids with varying refractive index; photonic crystal sensors.

Final stage
If the number of students of the course will be limited to less than 10 people, by the end of the course the students will be asked to attend a final laboratory stage. Under normal conditions, during such a stage the students go in one of the laboratories where they had the laboratory sessions and work side by side with one researcher during his/her daily routine. The aim of the stage is not to perform individual work but to take part as an observed to the laboratory experiments.
After the stage the students will be requested to file and individual report on their final stage (max 15 pages). The report will be evaluated on the basis of a PASS/NO PASS mark. Students with a NO PASS mark for the final stage will not be admitted to the final exam.

If the number of students will be larger than 10 people, the laboratory stage will be substituted by the analysis of a scientific article related to the course.

Intermediate Tests and Final exam

Intermediate tests
During the course there will be 4 intermediate tests on the topics explained during the lectures held in the immediately preceding weeks. The tests will be based on a multiple choice answer format.
The tests will be handled by means of the Sapienza E-Learning Portal (Moodle).
Final Written Exam
After the end of the course, the students who will have got an average mark of the intermediate tests that is sufficient (Example: 12, 24, 18, 30 --> 21 sufficient), will have the possibility to skip the written exam and to get as a mark of the written exam the mean of the marks of the intermediate tests.
The written exam is based on a complete test with numerical multiple choice questions on all topics of the course. Also, students with a sufficient mark coming from the tests can decide to undergo the final written exam. In that case the mark will substitute the mark coming from the intermediate tests.

Final Oral Exam
The written exam will be followed by an oral colloquium in which the student will be asked to describe the work done during the final stage. The oral colloquium will contribute to the final mark with plus (+) or minus (–) 3 points.

Individual teacher to student meetings
The teacher will be available to reply to individual questions from students, concerning the topics explained during the lectures, every:
Wednesday 15:00 – 17:00
After the end of the course the teacher will remain available for the individual meetings by means of the same procedure.
For any personal question/problem concerning the Biophotonics Laboratory course, the students are invited to contact the teacher directly by e-mail:

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES
My scientific activity was devoted mainly to the study of the linear and nonlinear optical properties, of the second and third order, of dielectric and semiconducting materials. In particular I studied quantum confined systems, amorphous semiconductors, organic side-chain and conjugated polymers, molecular solids, guest-host systems. In the case of organic polymers, I studied extensively the first (Pockels) and second order (Kerr) electro-optics properties of thin films. I also carried out research on the fabrication and characterization of organic light emitting diodes and organic solar cells. During the last ten years my attention focused on biophotonics, in particular the application of Bloch surface waves (BSW) on photonic crystals for early diseases detection. The Bloch surface wave concept has also been adapted to gas detection with porous silicon photonic crystals and to photon engineering in dye sensitized solar cells. I also studied the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) on thin transparent conducting oxides.
