Curriculum

Jacopo Tirillò is a Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology (SSD ING-IND/22) at the Department of Chemical, Materials and Environmental Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome, where he also serves as Vice Director. He is a member of the Scientific Technical Council of the Italian Space Agency and holds a central role in numerous academic and scientific committees at both national and international levels.

Professor Tirillò teaches several courses at Sapienza, spanning topics such as Ceramic Materials, Advanced Composite Materials, Sustainable Materials for Industrial Engineering, and Materials Selection in Eco-Design. His teaching responsibilities extend across various engineering and science degree programs, both in Italian and English.

He earned his Ph.D. in Materials and Raw Materials Engineering from Sapienza in 2012 with a dissertation focused on carbon-phenolic ablative materials for thermal protection systems. He holds two master’s degrees in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, both awarded cum laude, with additional training in research innovation and educational methodologies.

His academic career at Sapienza has progressed steadily, from postdoctoral research roles and fixed-term researcher positions to his current professorship. He has been nationally accredited as Full Professor since 2022.

Prof. Tirillò is actively involved in Ph.D. supervision, having mentored numerous doctoral candidates in collaboration with prestigious institutions such as MIT, the University of Brno, and the Leibniz Institute in Dresden. He has also supervised over 30 theses at undergraduate and master’s levels.

He has taken part in numerous organizational and strategic roles, including as member of doctoral and scientific committees, quality assurance boards, and space allocation committees within his faculty. He is also actively engaged in scientific outreach through roles in symposium organization and editorial boards.

His research spans biomaterials, composites, eco-design, and sustainable technologies. He has been principal investigator for several nationally and internationally funded research projects, including “BOOMERANG,” a PRIN-funded initiative on sustainable packaging, and “SAFOOD4MED,” a PRIMA-funded project on antimicrobial bioplastics for food preservation.

An active member of scientific societies such as AIMAT, ESCM, and INSTM, Prof. Tirillò is recognized for his editorial contributions and as a reviewer for leading journals in materials science. His research has garnered international recognition through multiple high-impact publications, some ranking in the top downloads for their respective fields.
He has more than 202 journal papers (h-index = 37; Citations = 5234 – Source: Scopus database), 4 invited book chapters and serves as a frequent reviewer and referee in his field.
