My research profile 

I am a plant molecular ecologist with a passion for ancient DNA studies. I am interested in studying how organisms, especially plants, adapted in response to climate change. In my group we also identify species from ancient subtrates like lake sedimentscultural heritage materials (statues, manuscripts, herbarium material)  to characterise samples important for historical, archeological and ecological reconstructions. We use also modern DNA from contemporary plant populations to understand their current genetic relationships and history. For our taxonomic identifications we use molecular techniques based on DNA metabarcoding & shotgun metagenomics. 

I like also to use #Art to outreach in #Science; see some examples on my personal homepage here.


Since 1994 I have worked in Sweden at Uppsala University and from November 2019 I returned to Italy where I am Associate Professor at Sapienza University of Rome. I have a BSc/MSc degree (1991) in Agricultural Sciences, a PhD (2000) in Forest Genetics and a Swedish 'Docentur' (2012) in Plant Ecology.

La biogeografia delle piante (fitogeografia) è una disciplina molto ampia nel suo contenuto, che usa e cerca di sintetizzare discipline tra loro diverse: • Sistematica - classificazione e nomenclatura delle piante basata su un approccio filogenetico-sistematico (cladistico)• Ecologia vegetale• Evoluzione• Biologia riproduttiva delle piante (importanti per l’insediamento e la dispersione) • Genetica: le regole di base• Geologia e storia della Terra• Paleoecologia • Climatologia • Geografia.

SISTEMATICA E CONSERVAZIONE DELLA FLORA 1019204 2022/2023

Sistematica e conservazione della flora  è un corso teorico-pratico che approfondisce gli aspetti evolutivi e conservazionistici delle piante terrestri nel contesto della storia naturale della Terra. Affronta la diversità vegetale esistente dal punto di vista sistematico, filogenetico e biogeografico e fornisce gli strumenti e i metodi per poter identificare e descrivere le piante, capire la loro distribuzione sul pianeta e identificare la loro posizione nella filogenesi delle piante terrestri. Il corso fornisce inoltre una conoscenza base della teoria delle strategie di conservazione, valorizzazione ed uso sostenibile delle risorse vegetali con particola riferimento alla flora d’Italia.

Il corso fornisce agli studenti gli strumenti concettuali e metodologici per l'applicazione delle analisi biologiche ai beni culturali. Al termine del corso gli studenti impareranno a identificare i materiali biologici che compongono le opere d'arte, gli agenti biologici che deteriorano le opere d'arte e le strategie per la conservazione del patrimonio culturale. Attraverso l'uso di tecniche tradizionali e più avanzate, come l'uso del DNA antico, gli studenti impareranno a ricostruire i paleoambienti e ad indagare l'impatto umano su di essi.

FITOGEOGRAFIA 1041381 2021/2022

Questo corso esamina i modelli di distribuzione delle piante sulla Terra e i fattori che influenzano la loro distribuzione geografica. Studieremo assieme le somiglianze delle comunità vegetali in diverse parti del mondo, così come i modelli di distribuzione dei singoli taxa. Discuteremo i metodi utilizzati dalla scienza per investigare la storia e l’evoluzione delle piante, capiremo le cause dei cambiamenti degli areali nel tempo e impareremo a capire i possibili sviluppi in relazione ai cambiamenti climatici del futuro. Faremo due escursioni botaniche per capire e vedere quanto imparato insieme durante il corso.
