For students interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the culture of the Caucasus, some introductory workshops will also be offered on Classical Armenian, Modern Georgian, and Writing, Manuscripts, and Miniatures in the South Caucasus as part of the AAF (Altre Attività Formative /Additional Educational Activities). These seminars will also take place during the academic year, at times to be determined based on classroom availability. Please see below the section dedicated to AAF.
Course Program (Course Content):
This course aims to introduce students to the diverse natural landscapes and cultures of the Caucasus, with a particular focus on the Southern Caucasus during the ancient and late antique periods. The geographical and political boundaries of the region will be explored, alongside its orographic and hydrographic features, the variety of languages and religions, with an emphasis on how different natural landscapes have shaped human settlement patterns and social organization. The course will also highlight the political, cultural, and religious influence exerted by neighbouring great empires—particularly the Roman-Byzantine and Iranian empires—on the formation of the kingdoms of the Southern Caucasus (Iberia-Georgia, Armenia, Caucasian Albania). Finally, attention will be given to the rediscovery and valorization of their own past by the independent states of the Southern Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan). Throughout the course, we will read and analyze ancient texts, focusing on the challenges involved in using these sources to reconstruct the history of these territories.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, students will have a general understanding of the diversity of the Caucasian region, both from a geographical-physical and cultural perspective, and they will be aware of the interaction between these two aspects. This framework will help them grasp, on the one hand, the reasons behind the great diversity of political structures and cultural productions historically attested in the Caucasus, and on the other hand, the roots of the numerous conflicts that, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, have affected the region.
Prerequisites:
No specific prerequisites are required for enrolment in the course.
Teaching Method:
The course is structured around lectures, which, however, will include continuous interaction between the teacher and the students.
Assigned Readings:
In addition to the materials provided during lectures, students will delve into various aspects of Caucasian history according to their interests. To this purpose, they are required to agree with the teacher on a selection of readings from the following texts:

Examination Method:
The exam will consist of an oral examination based on the content covered in the lectures and the readings agreed upon with the teacher, based on the student’s interests.
Students must inform the instructor at least one week before the exam date which chapters they have chosen to study from the materials shared on the course’s Google Classroom.

2) Second semester 2026-2027
LM-FILOL. Lingua e cultura armena cod. 10600337
Il corso si propone di fornire agli studenti la conoscenza linguistica per affrontare testi armeni di media difficoltà e per collocarli criticamente nel contesto storico, letterario e culturale che li ha prodotti. Oltre alle principali strutture grammaticali e lessicali dell’armeno classico, saranno illustrate le dinamiche storiche e letterarie fondamentali che hanno caratterizzato la cultura armena antica. In questo modo gli studenti saranno introdotti all’analisi di testi e contesti storici nuovi, seppur connessi con quelli già incontrati nel loro ambito di studi, così da acquisire consapevolezza della complessa articolazione del mondo antico.
La frequenza del corso non richiede particolari prerequisiti.

LM-Arch. STORIA E RELIGIONI DEL CAUCASO cod. 10629931
Il corso si propone di introdurre gli studenti alla complessità storica, culturale e religiosa della regione caucasica, analizzandone le specificità nel quadro delle interazioni con i grandi imperi limitrofi, in particolare quello romano-bizantino e quelli iranici. Particolare attenzione sarà dedicata all’organizzazione politica del territorio e alle forme religiose che hanno caratterizzato le società caucasiche nel lungo periodo. Il corso valorizzerà il dialogo tra fonti letterarie e dati della cultura materiale, presentando alcuni siti archeologici significativi del Caucaso utili a illustrare i processi storici, culturali e religiosi nella regione.
La frequenza del corso non richiede nessun prerequisito specifico.

3) AAF WORKSHOPS 2026-2027
Introduction to Old Armenian (Dates, times and room to be confirmed)
The workshop aims to introduce students to the study of Classical Armenian. First, a general and very concise overview of Armenia and its history will be presented to the students. The Armenian alphabet will then be introduced, including its creation and its relationship with other Caucasian alphabets. Finally, students will be provided with basic knowledge of phonetics, nominal, pronominal, and verbal morphology, as well as basic notions of syntax. The workshop will also involve the reading and analysis of simple texts in Classical Armenian. To achieve the set objectives, students are expected to attend classes regularly and to independently review the material explained during the lessons.

Elementary Modern Georgian (Dates, times and room to be confirmed)
The workshop aims to provide students with a foundation in the grammar system of modern Georgian, with particular emphasis on some distinctive features of the language, such as its agglutinative nominal declension, polypersonal verbal inflection, and ergativity. The seminar will begin with an introduction to the Georgian alphabet, followed by the fundamentals of phonetics, nominal and verbal morphology. Reading and comprehension exercises based on elementary texts will be included, with the aim of helping students acquire basic vocabulary and phrases useful for everyday communication. In order to achieve the set objectives, students will be required to attend classes regularly and engage in independent study of the material covered in the lessons.

Preserving Memory: Writing, Manuscripts, and Miniatures in the South Caucasus (Dates, times and room to be confirmed)
The workshop aims to introduce students to the history of the spread of writing in the South Caucasus, exploring the origins of literary production and the various forms of its transmission. The traditions related to the birth of the ancient Caucasian alphabets will be examined, along with the flourishing Armenian and Georgian manuscript production, with particular attention to the Albanian palimpsests, the only witnesses to the written culture of the ancient Kingdom of Caucasian Albania. Basic concepts of codicology will be introduced, with particular attention to the Armenian tradition, focusing on manuscript production sites, their decorative elements, and the institutions currently involved in the preservation, restoration, and promotion of this heritage.

Curriculum
Marco Bais ha conseguito la laurea in Lettere classiche con una tesi in Sanscrito all’Università di Bologna e il dottorato in Armenistica all’Università Cattolica di Milano. È stato visiting researcher presso l’Università statale di Erevan, borsista post-doc e assegnista di ricerca all’Università di Bologna, e visiting scholar presso l’Università statale di S. Pietroburgo. Dal 2000 ha insegnato Lingua armena e Storia della Chiesa armena al Pontificio Istituto Orientale (Roma), dal 2006 come professore associato, tenendo contemporaneamente corsi di Linguistica, Storia della civiltà del Medio Oriente e Lingua e cultura armena nelle Università Ca’ Foscari, La Sapienza, Tor Vergata, Europea di Roma. È stato visiting professor presso la Facultad de Literatura Cristiana y Clásica dell’Universidad San Dámaso, Madrid e Brenninkmeijer-Werhahn visiting professor al Center for the Study of Christianity, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israele. Dal 2022 è docente nel settore STAA-01/M (L-OR/13: Armenistica, Caucasologia, Mongolistica, Turcologia) presso l’Università di Roma “La Sapienza”. Ha diretto tesi di laurea triennale, magistrale e di dottorato.
Ha partecipato a diversi progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali: Documenti armeni nelle biblioteche e negli archivi italiani: classificazione, studio e pubblicazione (Progetto ex 60%); Manoscritti, documenti e testi armeni: catalogazione e traduzione (Progetto di ricerca RFO); I gruppi del primo cristianesimo e i loro testi e le ripercussioni nell’area greca ed armena (IV-VII secolo) (Prin); I popoli dell’Asia Centrale nelle fonti medievali armene e occidentali (Progetto in cooperazione tra l’Università statale di Bologna e l’Università statale di Erevan); La Epideixis de San Ireneo. Cuestiones filológico-teológicas (Progetto dell’Universidad San Dámaso, Madrid); Armenio-griego: traducciones cristianas. Edición, traducción y comentario de la Epideixis de San Ireneo de Lyon (Progetto dell’Universidad San Dámaso, Madrid). Attualmente è associate researcher del Progetto ERC ArmEn (Armenia entangled: connectivity and cultural encounters in Medieval Eurasia 9th-14th centuries, Università di Firenze).
I suoi interessi di ricerca includono la storiografia armena (secoli V-XV); le relazioni politico-religiose tra Armenia e Albània Caucasica; il regno armeno di Cilicia (secoli XII-XIV); le relazioni religiose e commerciali tra l’Armenia e l’Europa occidentale; l’Armenia nel periodo mongolo e timuride; le interazioni linguistiche e la circolazione di testi nell’area subcaucasica.
Ha ricevuto il premio “Fondazione Stefano Serapian” per la promozione degli studi armeni in Italia (ex aequo con L.D. Nocetti). È Dottore honoris causa in Armenistica dell’Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze della Repubblica d’Armenia. È membro corrispondente dell’Istituto Veneto di Scienze ed Arti; membro ordinario dell’Accademia Roveretana degli Agiati; membro dell’Accademia Ambrosiana in Classe Orientali nella Sezione Armenistica.
È autore di un centinaio di contributi scientifici, tra cui 2 monografie. Ha partecipato a numerosi convegni nazionali e internazionali, che in parte ha contribuito a organizzare. In particolare, ha co-organizzato 2 General Conference dell’Association internationale des études Arméniennes (Oxford 2017 e Halle 2021). È membro dell’Associazione Padus-Araxes (dal 1995) e dell’Association Internationale des Etudes Arméniennes (AIEA), dal 1990. Dal 2009 è Segretario scientifico della sezione armenistica dell’Associazione Padus-Araxes e dal 2014 è membro del Comitato dell’AIEA ed è l’Editore della Newsletter dell’associazione. È, inoltre, membro di vari comitati editoriali: “Bazmavep” (fascia A per area 10/N1); “Eastern Christian Cultures in Contact” (Brepols); “Matenadaran. Medieval and Modern Armenian Studies”; “Rassegna Armenisti Italiani”.
