Curriculum
Giulio De Donato was born in Cork, Ireland. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy, in 2003 and 2007, respectively.
He was a Research Associate with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome, from 2007 to 2008; from 2008 to 2019 he was an Assistant Professor, first with the same Department and, since 2010, with the Department of Electrical and Energy Engineering (DIEE). Since September 2019 he has been an Associate Professor in IIND-08/A with the DIEE. He is the Scientific Coordinator of a collaborative research agreement between the DIAEE and the Department of Electrical, Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, University of Catania, for research in the field of wide-bandgap-semiconductor-based drives, electrical machines and power converters. He is the Sapienza coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master "Sustainable Transportation and Electric Power Systems" (STEPS), and President of its Academic Committee for the 2026–2029 edition. His current research interests include digital control of electrical drives and of grid-connected inverters, analysis and design of permanent magnet machines (with emphasis on axial-flux topologies), and GaN-based power converters.
Dr. De Donato is a Senior Member of the IEEE Industry Applications, IEEE Power Electronics, IEEE Industrial Electronics, and IEEE Power and Energy Societies. He is a member of the IEEE IAS Industrial Drives Committee, the IAS Electric Machines Committee, the IES Electric Machines Committee, and the PELS Technical Committee on Electrical Machines, Drives and Automation. He is currently serving as Chair of the IEEE IAS Electric Machines Committee (2026–2027), as Technical Program Chair for IEEE ECCE 2026 and the IEEE IAS Annual Meeting 2027, and as Technical Committee Paper Review Chair for the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and IEEE Industry Applications Magazine. He received the 2014 First Prize Paper Award and the 2016 Third Prize Paper Award, both from the IAS Industrial Drives Committee, the 2020 IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics Outstanding Reviewer Award, and the 2023 IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion Star Reviewer Certificate of Appreciation. He was an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and IEEE Industry Applications Magazine (2017–2025) and for the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (2020–2025).
