Massimo Roma was born in Albano Laziale (Rome), Italy, on 1965. He received the M.S. degree
in Mathematics (summa cum laude) from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" on October 1988.
He received the Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from the University of Rome "La Sapienza"
on October 1995.

From August 1, 1996 to December 31, 2004 he was Assistant Professor of Operations Research with
the Department of Computer and Systems Science "A. Ruberti" (now Department of Computer, Control,
and Management Engineering) of the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

From January 1, 2005 he is Associate Professor of Operations Research with the Department of
Computer, Control, and Management Engineering "A. Ruberti", of the University of Rome "La Sapienza".
He currently teaches courses on Operations Research in the B.S. and M.S. program in "Management
Engineering" and in "Computer Engineering" with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome
"La Sapienza". He usually is the advisor of several Bachelor and Master degree theses.
He is member of the advisory board of the Italian Research Doctorate (Ph.D. degree) in "Automatic
Control, Bioengineering and Operations Research" of the University of Rome "La Sapienza".
Since April 2021 he is holder of the National Scientific Qualification for Italian Universities as
Full Professor of Operations Research (SC 01/A6).
His research interests concern Nonlinear Optimization, focusing on the development of methods
and algorithms for the solution of nonlinear optimization problems. In particular, he provided
recognized contributions both from the theoretical and the computational point of view to large
scale unconstrained optimization. Other topics of the research activity regards global optimization
and the solution of constrained optimization problems with a particular structure. Another
important aspect of his research concerns the application of optimization and simulation models
for the solution of real world problems. In the last years, his research activity was also focused on the
Simulation-based Optimization, namely the optimization of complex systems which can not be
described analytically, but only by mean of simulation models. This methodology has been successfully
applied to problems arising in Healthcare Management.

He is author of 30 papers published on indexed (Scopus/WOS) International Journals.
He is the author the section "Large scale unconstrained optimization" of the Encyclopedia of
Optimization, C. Floudas, P. Pardalos (eds.), Springer, 2009.
He is member of Unione Matematica Italiana (UMI) and of Gruppo Nazionale per il Calcolo Scientifico
(GNCS) at Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica (INDAM), section of Numerical Analysis.

Since 1993 he regularly participates as lecturer at International Conferences: he was speaker
in contributed or invited sessione of 36 Conferences.
He was session, minisymposium and stream organizer of National and International Conferences
and he was also member of program/scientific committees.

Since 1994 he takes part in several research program of national interest in the field of Nonlinear
Optimization funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research. In the years 1996-1997 he
took part in the international UK-Italy (British Council-Italian Ministry of University and Research)
research program "Exploiting negative curvature in large scale nonlinear programming".

From 1995 to 2013, he was co-organizer of a series of international Workshops (held every three years),
on Nonlinear Optimization in the framework of the International School of Mathematics "G. Stampacchia",
at the Center for Scientific culture "E. Majorana" in Erice (TP), Italy. He was co-editor of the
proceedings of the Workshop held in 2004 published in the volume "Large Scale Nonlinear Optimization",

He was co-editor of three special issues of the international journal Computational Optimization and
Applications devoted to the Workshops held in 2007, 2010 and 2013.

In the years 1997-2003 he was scientific consultant at the Institute of Systems Analysis and Computer
Science (IASI) of the National Research Council (CNR) in Rome.

On June 2011, he was co-founder of the Academic Spin-off (now Start Up) ACTOR - Analytics, Control
Technologies and Operations Research, between SAPIENZA - University of Rome and the venture ACT
Operations Research whose activities mainly concerns optimization methods and decisions support systems
based on mathematical models.
