Performing Arts and the Science of Performance

Educational objectives

At the end of the course the student will know the main periods in which Dance History unfolds (also in relation to extra-western dance cultures). During the course the student acquires skills in the field of Performing Arts criticism according to the specific historical perspective of the discipline. The activities carried out to increase critical skills are: a) the writing of brief papers on dance topics b) Participation in dance workshops led by professional dancers and choreographers. Skills in communication are experienced through writing and video reports. At the end of the course the student will have acquired autonomous study skills thanks to 1) a better knowledge of historical sources about dance, their availability in libraries and archives 2) the ability to relate these sources to the cultural and historical background that produced them.

Acquisition of knowledge and recognition of theatrical methodology with reference to researches and experimentations involving the definition of an "actor's science" in 20th century, linked to the rediscovery of performing knowledge of European tradition and to the valorisation of extra-European theories and practices.

The course deals with the notion of “cinematographic style”, with a particular focus on the relation between film style, production practices and technologies.
By the end of the course the student will have to acquire a complex knowledge of the theoretical discourses related to the idea of style in film; master the main methodologies for analysing style in film; be capable of developing film analysis related to the acquired theoretical and methodological concepts.
In order to strengthen such abilities the students will also have to develop an audiovisual project. It is to be noted that this experimental part of this course is reserved to attending students as it is based on a series of group exercises to be carried out during classes.
By the end of the course the student will be able to elaborate autonomous study itineraries based on the acquired methodologies.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic conceptual tools for understanding the fundamental questions of aesthetics and art. Students not only will refine and specialize their knowledge of texts examined, but they will also develop their ability to analyse and comment on these same texts.

The main objective of the course is to provide a basic knowledge of Medieval Art History.
As regards specific objectives, students are expected to learn:
a) the ability to comprehend Medieval artworks in historic, stylistic, iconographic and technical terms;
b) the ability to describe them with the appropriate vocabulary of the discipline;
c) autonomy of critical judgement.
In order to pursue these targets, during the course students will be asked to take part actively in the analysis of artworks and monuments by employing the basic critical categories necessary to their correct framework. A parallel objective will be also the development of an adequate awareness about artistic heritage and its valorization.
The themes and topics of the course, such as the competencies and abilities to learn, will be dealt with a multidisciplinary approach in relation with the Study Programme of the students.

The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the anthropological disciplines; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which anthropological projects are activated; it shows the variability of anthropological fields of interest; it enables the student to master the anthropological topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.
