Medical Biotechnologist

Functions:

Medical biotechnologists apply their biotechnological knowledge to the progress of the medical sciences.

In particular, they can perform the following highly responsible functions:

- the use of biotechnological procedures for the production of innovative drugs, medicines and diagnostics, medicines for advanced therapies in the fields of gene therapy, cell therapy and tissue engineering;

- research on biotechnological databases for the characterization and design of bio-drugs and diagnostic products

- experimentation and coordination of research activities in the biomedical field;

- quality control of biotechnological and bioengineering products; development of diagnostic tests and screening of biological drugs,

- development and application of products derived from the manipulation of DNA, cells and tissues;

- design, production and control of hormones and vaccines;

- use of biomedical technologies for the planning and definition of prevention and diagnosis interventions;

- participation in therapeutic approaches, in particular the development and testing of innovative medicines or biotechnological systems to be applied to human pathology;

- organization of bio-banks of cells and tissues;

- development of bioengineering medical devices with applications in the surgical field

- functions of Clinical Research Associate - CRA for different therapeutic fields;

- development of patents of biotechnological and/or bioengineering products and the evaluation of their application in the industrial field;

- collaboration in the drafting of regulations concerning technical/scientific issues in the identification of new therapeutic principles;

- strategic consultancy in the biotechnology sector regarding technology transfer to the business sector.

- organization and development of small and medium-sized enterprises and spin-offs in the biotechnology sector.

In order to achieve a higher level of responsibility and autonomy, graduates with a masters degree in medical biotechnology can continue their academic training, in particular, through a second-level masters, research doctorate schools, and specialization schools.

Skills:

Medical biotechnologists have research skills with an in-depth medical knowledge, so they can work in with the clinical world, design new strategies in the field of human health, with particular attention to prevention, therapy and diagnostics.

L’11 dicembre 2017, presso la Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, il Presidente ed alcuni Docenti del CdS hanno preso parte al 1° Meeting “La formazione in biotecnologie in Italia”, organizzato dal Comitato Nazionale per la Biosicurezza, le Biotecnologie e le Scienze della Vita (CNBBSV). Tale evento ha rappresentato un'occasione di confronto con dati ed esperienze portati da Assobiotec, Farmindustria, Associazione Nazionale Biotecnologi Italiani, Federazione Ialiana Biotecnologi, Scopus Elsevier.
L’11 gennaio 2018, nell’ambito della Tavola rotonda “La formazione in biotecnologie. Incontro con le parti sociali”, organizzata dall’area biotecnologica della Facoltà di Farmacia e Medicina, il Presidente, i componenti della Commissione AQ ed altri docenti del CdS si sono incontrati con un rappresentante di Assobiotec e con un rappresentante di due imprese start up (Diatheva S.r.L. ed EryDel S.p.A.), per discutere dell’adeguatezza dell’offerta formativa del CdS rispetto alla domanda di formazione e alle prospettive di impiego nel settore lavorativo dei laureati in biotecnologie mediche.
