Optional Groups

1. Didactic goals

The Didactic goals of the Master of Science in Product and Service Design are to train Designer in the field of advanced production of innovative artefacts, with strategic skills and vision and management of the typical processes of Post-Industrial society.
The Master is tougth in English and is designed to welcome students from different geographical and educational backgrounds (design, engineering, economics) by creating a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment by integrating design skills, engineering skills, socio-critical skills useful for product and service development necessary for the development and management of Design-driven product, process and service innovations, operating at an international level.

Students will be engaged in intense design activity, thinking creatively and investigating critically, through:
- knowledge and understanding of the material culture of Design in relation to socio-cultural and economic repercussions (ICAR / 13, SPS / 08, M-FIL / 04; L-ART / 03);
- the control of the technical-productive, technical-functional and formal aspects of the artefacts (material or intangible) but also of the set of processes that accompany the planning-production-consumption path informed and guided by economic, social and environmental sustainability strategies (ICAR / 13, ICAR / 12, ICAR / 17; ICAR / 08, ING-INF / 05; ING-IND / 16; SECS-P / 08);
_ the development of Design Thinking skills which, by grasping the potential and resources of a local system, connect them with a critical capacity to the global dimension by developing products and / or services which, starting from the understanding of cultural and social phenomena and of the relationships between resources and activity, is able to produce Design-driven Innovations that condition the material and intangible culture of contemporary societies (ICAR / 13).
There are also 12 CFUs to be chosen which, together with the 18 CFUs dedicated to the final exam and the 12 CFUs dedicated to Further Learning (Integrative Activities) to be carried out in companies, professional studios and research centers that work internationally, allow each student to expect a personalized training course within the wide spectrum of experimental areas of Product and Service Design.

2. Professional opportunities
(Decrees on Classes, art.3, paragraph 7)
This Master of Science offers skills and competences relating to two specific professions.
a) Product and Service Design Strategist specialized in the design of products and services with a high innovation content. The multidisciplinary nature of training suited to internationalization makes this professional figure suitable for holding leadership roles in Design Thinking processes with respect to the entire cycle of conception, production, communication, consumption of a product or service.
This figure is designed for different job contests, both within small and large companies and advanced design agencies, however aimed at the development of process and product innovation with particular attention to the sectors of:
- Products and services with high technological and performance content (Smart Objects, IoT, Robotics, Digital Society)
- Products and services intended for particular users or emerging use contests (Health-care, Design for Emergency, Design for Sustainability)
- Products and Services for Social Innovation and New Economies (Design for Sharing Economy, Critical Design)
The Product and Service Design Strategist thus trained in the Master's Degree course finds ample employment opportunities in all professional and corporate activities operating in the field of Product and Service Design, in the form of:
- freelancer;
- within public and private institutions and bodies;
- within design studios and companies;
- within small, medium and large companies.
b) Product and Service Design Researcher specialized in research in the field of Design-Driven Innovation.
This specific professional figure will be able to fit into the Advanced Research environments carried out both in Academic Bodies, Applied Research Institutions and in the Research and Development Divisions of Large International Companies. This figure is designed for different application areas, with particular attention to interdisciplinarity with other areas of Scientific Research, however aimed at the development of applied research projects in favor of international production and social systems with particular attention to the sectors of:
- Design for Information Technology;
- Design for Digital Manufacturing and Industry 4.0;
- User experience design;
- Design for new materials;
- Design for the new Economy.
The Product and Service Design Researcher thus trained in the Master's Degree course finds professional opportunities within:
- Applied Research Bodies and Institutions and Research and Development Divisions;
- Large International Companies;
The same can be done in research doctorates in the various field of Design.

3. Application to the Master's Degree Course in Product and Service Design
To apply at the Master of Science in Product and Service Design, the candidates need to have a Bachelor Degree, obtained in Italy or abroad, in these field:
- Design,
- Industrial Engineering,
- Computer Engineering,
- Engineering,
- Architecture,
Economics and Marketing.
A certificate of English language (level B2) is a mandatory prerequisite for enrollment. The certificate must be delivered together with the admission application.

The Master of Science in Product and Service Design is divided into 4 semesters (2 years):

- the first semester is dedicated to an improvement of the critical and analytical ability to explore the languages and methodologies of contemporary design and acquire skills in graphics and technology;

- the second is dedicated to the development of skills for managing the entire design process, from the concept to the prototype; in addition, the Elective Courses offer to deepen or integrate specific skills;

- the third semester focuses on the understanding and development of production and consumption processes that are sustainable on an economic-productive, socio-cultural and environmental level;

- the last semester is dedicated to the thesis final work and to develop or internship in national and international companies or exchange programs in international universities or research centers.

All the design activities are supported by the technical-scientific resources of the 'Sapienza Design Factory' Research Laboratory, dedicated to experimentation in the field of Digital Fabbrication, and of the 'Sapienza Design Research' Interdepartmental Center, that develop multidisciplinary research in the field of Advanced-Design.

The Courses, all taugth in English, are divided in:

- monodisciplinary, with a purely theoretical character aimed at providing those knowledge suitable for developing analytical-critical skills;

- integrated laboratories, with two different disciplinies, one with a more theoretical approach and one with an application vocation;

- multidisciplinary design studios, to implement articulated research-definition-development-experimentation processes according to the criteria of design thinking.

This Master Program is designed to allow the student to:

- know the fundamentals of design culture and possess the tools of analysis and understanding of the mutual influences between contemporary cultural and technological factors;

- include the performance features of the materials and the specificity of the production technologies also in relation to the problems of environmental and economic sustainability of the product;

- have ethnography skills applied to design and user-experience design for the development of social innovation processes;

- know the theory and tools of strategic design, service design and interaction design for the development of product and / or service innovation processes;

- have design thinking skills and design synthesis skills;

- develop experiences and competence of empowerment and team work also in relation to dynamics of multicultural and multidisciplinary interaction.
