Course program
Introduction to General Pathology: definitions, concept of health and disease, etiology, and pathogenesis. Cellular Pathology: adaptations, reversible and irreversible injury, cell death, tissue regression and degeneration. Inflammation: mechanisms of acute and chronic inflammation, vascular and cellular responses, chemical mediators, exudate, and phagocytosis. Healing, Repair, and Regeneration: tissue repair processes, wound healing, regeneration, and the role of stem cells. Tumors: etiology, classification and nomenclature, staging and grading, genetic and molecular bases of neoplastic transformation, concepts of initiation, promotion, and progression. Genetic Diseases: types of mutations, monogenic inheritance, chromosomal alterations, and principles of gene therapy. Elements of Immunopathology: components of the immune system, mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity, immunodeficiencies, autoimmunity, and hypersensitivity reactions. Organ-specific Pathophysiology: Nervous System: principles of neurological disease pathophysiology. Heart and Cardiovascular System: functional anatomy, arrhythmias, ischemic heart diseases, hypertrophy, cardiomyopathies, atherosclerosis. Musculoskeletal System: dystrophies and main degenerative disorders. Blood and Hemostasis: coagulation disorders and blood cell abnormalities. Kidney: general pathophysiology and endocrine functions. Liver: general pathophysiology, metabolic, secretory, and detoxifying functions. Advanced Methodologies for the study and resolution of pathophysiological alterations.
Prerequisites
The student must know structures and functions of the different cell types and kinds of tissues of the human body, and must know the biochemistry of the main biological macromolecules.

Teaching mode
The course takes place with lectures in which students are required a continuous interaction by favoring questions on the topics discussed during the lesson.

Exam mode
Oral test on all subjects of the integrated course. To pass the exam with a minimum score of 18/30, the student must have sufficient preparation in all subjects. To pass the exam with a maximum score of 30/30, the student must have a complete and thorough preparation of all the topics covered.
