The origins of medicine: The sources of the history of medicine: paleopathology, archaeological, iconographic and written documentation. The techniques of historical research.
Medicine in the ancient world: Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome.
The Greek world and the birth of rational medical thought: priestly medicine and the cult of Asclepius. Pythagoras, Hippocrates of Kos and the theory of the four humors. Medical schools and philosophical sects.
From the Middle Ages to the modern age: Medieval medicine and the revival of medical studies. The birth of secular hospitals and religious assistance. The figure of the patient and care in Christian Europe. Renaissance medicine and the first anatomical discoveries.
The birth of modern nursing care: From religious charity to professional assistance. Key historical figures: Florence Nightingale — reform of nursing care, hygiene, and nurse education. Don Luigi Palazzolo and charitable assistance in the Italian context. The evolution of nursing in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The evolution of healthcare practices and specialized treatments: From empirical medicine to scientific medicine. Main figures of change: John Snow — the birth of epidemiology and infection control; Franca Ongaro Basaglia — psychiatric reform and the centrality of the person. The transformation of hospitals and care for chronic and psychiatric patients.
The “bacteria hunters” and the microbiological revolution: From the discovery of invisible microorganisms to modern microbiology. The great scientific discoveries: Pasteur, Koch, Fleming. The polio vaccine, the fight against tuberculosis and the new frontiers of biomedical research.
Contemporary medicine and the ethical-social dimension: The impact of technology and biomedicine on healthcare. Bioethics, personalized medicine and new models of care. Medicine and society: the psychological dimension of caring.
Integrative activities: Guided tour of the Museum of the History of Medicine – Sapienza University of Rome. Workshop for discussion and historical analysis on Roman hospitals.
