Educational objectives

The teaching intends to reconstruct the evolutionary process of the Faculty of Architecture of Rome, also in relation to other educational institutions. A list of the main events; conceptual orientations in the various areas of building; sometimes opposing, sometimes agreeing tendencies; criticism as an interpretative tool of the didactic and research framework in its multiple and different cultural aspects will constitute the issues to be addressed. With this program we intend to build a memory of the constantly changing but continuous life in its foundations of the Roman school of architecture. A memory that allows students to be aware of the complex context that a more than century-old tradition synthesizes, thus making them able to move within a rich and labyrinthine path. Without knowing where you are starting from, it is difficult to decide in which direction to move.

The design studio intends to address urban and housing design issues, in general and comprehensive terms and aims to let students develop the knowledge bases to recognize in the city the morphological different patterns and the relations between them and the building typologies in order to solve efficiency, spatial, symbolic, housing market issues. The Course will investigate the fundamental literature from the Modern Movement, to the school of Rome case studies, to the latest contemporary housing projects. The studio aims to let students develop the knowledge bases for an aware design activity at urban and architectural scale, with special reference to residential design, technology and structural elements, environmental issues and real estate market trends.

The course aims to provide the student with the basics of the methodology of bibliographic, archival and direct research of 'sources', written but also buildings, to reconstruct the history of the architectural phases of individual works or urban spaces, also aimed at protecting the heritage architectural historian.

LIGHTING DESIGN Today lighting design is one of the new frontiers of architecture, flexible and inventive by an incessant technological development. The course moves from the knowledge of the most up-to-date technologies to transform the potential of light into a language for the architectural project even in the name of energy sustainability.

The course will investigate the typological, spatial and liturgical issues of a small building for worship. The subject matter of the exercise will allow the student to acquire the basic tools necessary for the architectural project of a space dedicated to liturgical action.

The course aim is to study in more detail structural modeling and analysis, with particular reference to the criteria of design formulation and structural model, with its numerical implementation. By characterizing the models for the structural system and acting forces and their implementation with numerical codes, theoretical knowledge and operational procedures will be extended and completed; specific skills for the statement and development structural analysis of even complex buildings will be developed.

This Course features a combination of theoretical and design approaches. The theoretical ones are concerning with the relationship between Information Technology and Architecture in this historical phase. From the design point of view, students are guided through tutorials and lectures in different IT environments in order to understand the potentials of each one. The course develops in eight thematic cycles that range from "World of Raster" to the "Scripting". A research project with design exemplification concludes the course in a public conference with guests and experts.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
The Landscape Architecture, the design culture for the outdoor space, in its various manifestations, has recently shown interesting trends that have extended in different directions the skills of this discipline, making it a key element of reflection for the rethinking of the human habitat transformation.The course aims to provide an opening on the cognitive, theoretical and technical level of the main aspects of Landscape Architecture, in its various phases, with particular reference to the international achievements: from the park to the urban public space, to the urban and suburban landscaping work, using instruments of reading, exploration of the motivation, knowledge of natural and the use of artificial elements and the main techniques, heritage of this specific discipline.

The program is intended for students interested in focused training on Italian Modern Architecture and Italian Modern Urban Design with a special focus on the Rome as Modern Capital Town as case-study, and the idea of the city expressed by Roman post-unitarian and post-war neighborhoods. Given the participation to the course in the previous years of non European students the teaching objectives have been extended to European and non-European urbanism and design case studies in emerging cities.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN SYNTHESIS STUDIO
The Architectural design Synthesis Studio is the final design examination, which concludes the students’ academic career. In this studio particular emphasis is placed on the realization of the project and as a result the integration of a number of disciplines. Equal weight is given to graphic representation involving the use of both traditional techniques and digital technology. Students will develop individual projects largely within the context of the design studio seminars.

The Urban planning design Synthesis Studio, as the ultimate experience of urban training time, contributes to master fully building of a design experience, defining the phases in totality, from objectives to cognitive processes, design definition, technical and quantitative specificity, impact assessments, and the explicit rules and regulations according to a methodological original approach. The educational objective is the full maturity in managing the entire design process.

ARCHITECTURAL AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN SYNTHESIS STUDIO
The Synthesis Studio is the final design examination, which concludes the students’ academic career. The Synthesis Studio in Architectural and Landscape design will develop an awareness of the multidisciplinary relations involved in the complex urban project with the aim of controlling the transformation of the physical environment and the pursuit of the quality of project design through a functional and aesthetic integration of built structures, urban spaces and landscape.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND EXHIBITION DESIGN SYNTHESIS STUDIO
Interior architectural Synthesis Studio deals with complex design issues connected to the subjects of Interior Architecture as the main instruments to activate and realize the process of recovery and rehabilitation of existing buildings and urban structures. The aim of studio is to improve the students' listening ability and critical skills towards architecture. This will enable them to envisage the transformation of the existing building heritage both on an aesthetic and functional level. The detail project will be the core of the didactic strategies of the studio, as a tool to control the spatial quality such as a link between users and designers, with the aim of providing practical-theoretical instruments to face the complexity of Interior Design.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL RESTORATION SYNTHESIS STUDIOThe Architectural design and structural restoration Synthesis Studio provides students with the tools to achieve the sensitivity to structural aspects that is instrumental to a conscious design of both new buildings, and of structural rehabilitation of existing ones. Attention will be given to the close correlation between the designed object and its building feasibility, with reference to utilized materials and techniques, by recognizing the structural aspect its role of implicit moment in the design activity. Topics will be developed with reference to both the traditional and the most recent and innovative approaches.

The final studio is focused on a project experimenting activity, which develops the contents of the technological design of the architecture and the experience gained in courses of other disciplines, coordinating and integrating into them. Objective of the course is to train students in the conscious and responsible use of all the knowledge gained in previous years through the project of a transformation of the built environment. For further levels of detail (from the construction to the detail scale), students will have to use operational tools (knowledge, analysis, prefabrication, quality assessment of the intervention) to ensure the necessary consistency between the project development phases on various levels of depth and technological feasibility of the proposed solutions, demonstrating its design and implementation suitability at various scales, with respect to the social, environmental and economic context.

RESTORATION DESIGN SYNTHESIS STUDIO
The Synthesis Studio aims to enrich the student's skills both in reference to the professional practice necessary to develop an architectural restoration project and by considering the new skills required to work with the tools offered by digitization in the field of prevention and conservation management. of historic buildings. The definition of a restoration project, to be carried out on the basis of the skills already acquired in the laboratories of the fourth year, will deepen all the contents necessary to adequately respond to requests from public calls for assignments or competitions. The use of digital technology in conservation, on the other hand, will be the subject of a general methodological framework and will be concretely carried out in the field using suitable platforms.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
Interior design is an approach to architecture, focusing on the contained space rather than on the wrap delimiting this space. The course investigates and points out the aspects that define the housing concept. Besides it verifies the outcomes in spatial configuration, seeking that relation between good building practice and quality of architectural form in order to create a coherent whole. SEISMIC DESIGN, ASSESSMENT AND UPGRADE
The course provides the fundamentals of earthquake generation and of the response of structures to earthquake motion. The course provides the tools for designing structures to withstand earthquakes, including innovative seismic protection techniques, as well as for checking compliance with seismic performance requirement according to modern design codes. Finally, the course covers recent important developments in the important area of seismic risk assessment and reduction for existing non-conforming buildings.

AESTHETICS
Subject of the course are themes and concepts of contemporary architecture analyzed from a philosophical point of view. The historical tradition of aesthetic studies is involved in the course as well as the present discussion. The architectural experience is therefore understood in reference to the practices of art, to the theories of perception and language, to the new knowledge about the relationships between neurosciences and aesthetic behavior.

The aim of the course is to provide students with the tools for lighting design of spaces and environments, both indoors and outdoors, using both the nature of light is artificial light. Will be considered the aspects of vision, electrotechnical aspects, regulatory issues, both aspects of energy conservation and light pollution.

METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS FOR PROJCT AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
The objective of the course is to provide the knowledge of the complex process management techniques, either at the design level – Project Management – and at the operational level – Construction Management – with particular reference to the roles of the different players, to the management instruments (WBS, Gantt, PERT, budgeting and budgetary control, cost control and quality assurance, risk analysis, verbalization and reporting), to the tender strategies and rules, to the direction and management of the construction site, till the testing and commissioning of the architecture.

The course aims at teaching historical and critical knowledge about the relation between the city and the territory with specific attention to themes and figures of the European tradition.

STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
The course aims to develop a critical knowledge for the formulation of opinion concerning the status and state of conservation of an existing building structure and, subsequently, for the identification of any appropriate interventions of structural reinforcement, calibrated in accordance with the limitations of all the constituents "boundary conditions" of the problem.

SCENOGRAPHY
The course introduced the basic notions of critical historical analysis of modern and contemporary scenography introducing the student to the complexity of the subject matter. It provides the instruments required to identify the similarities and differences in the various scenographic types, from the theatre to television and cinema, highlighting the experimental nature and value in stage set design in the search for new forms of expression and techniques of communication.

General learning outcomes
Main objective of the course is to provide students with the theoretical bases and quantitative tools to understand the dynamic behaviour of structures subjected to the seismic action, with the final goal of allowing correct application of the modern code provisions for seismic design, assessment and retrofit.
Specific learning outcomes
1. Knowledge and understanding skill.
At the end of the course the students know the fundamentals of the structural response to dynamic actions. Further, they understand the uncertainties associated with the prediction of seismic action and of structural capacity in the nonlinear regime, especially with reference to existing structures. Finally, they know the principles of seismic protection and the main design or intervention strategies.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding skill.
At the end of the course the students: a) can evaluate the design seismic action in a site of interest, determine the main dynamic properties of a structure and carry out preliminary verification of the structural performance; b) understand the difference between design seismic action and seismic action recorded at a site during a specific event, avoiding ill-funded comparisons; c) understand the architectural choices that have an impact on the ensuing dynamic behaviour of the structure subjected to seismic action; d) identify the construction details and conceptual design choices leasing to defective behaviour; e) are able to select at least at an initial design stage the strategy of intervention on an existing structure and to interact with seismic retrofit specialist.
3. Making judgement skill.
At the end of the course the students can judge by themselves the influence of their architectural design choices on the seismic behaviour and avoid gross conceptual design errors, likely leading to a more effective collaboration within the design team.
4. Communication skill.
At the end of the course the students can engage in technical discussion with another specialist in the field. Specific focus on the use of a rigorous technical language during lectures and the oral examination is aimed at ensuring the acquisition of this skill.
5. Learning skill.
At the end of the course the students can carry on self-learning on the course topics. Acquisition of this skill is ensured by the selection of the lecture notes, through which the students are familiarized with the authoritative sources of information in the international scientific and technical literature.

The main objective of the course is to provide students of architecture program with knowledge and tools related to culture and design on landscapes, to integrate their training with the specificities of a discipline that has an increasingly important role in the design disciplines.
In this sense, enhancing the complexity of the landscape and garden project, in the direction of forming an open sensitivity to the different natural and artificial components of space, contributes to responding to a broad and current environmental, ecological and social request, and to the construction of a basic specific technical knowledge of these forms of project.
The opening towards a "Poetics of the Gardens" is also understood as an expression of a creative approach mediated by the awareness of the uses and functions of space, integrated with a specific ability to manipulate the elements of space.

VISUAL CULTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL REPRESENTATION The course aims to stimulate critical skills in the students using instruments and products of contemporary visual culture and through the development of their narrative, communicative and explorative abilities using the peculiar potentialities of different media, so as to relate the image’s contemporary theories to the architectural project’s culture.

The course is intended to provide the main skills for an appropriate approach to the exhibition spaces, training students on both sides of Museum Design and Outfitting Architecture. TECHNOLOGICAL DESIGN FOR ARCHITECTURE REQUALIFICATION
The course aims at providing methodologies and instruments’ knowledge necessary in order to intervene on the architectural heritage within the framework of the technological culture, in the innovation scenario and towards full sustainability. Lost the limiting definition of the basic ‘recovery’, the ‘requalification’ integrates preservation, structural rehabilitation, maintenance and substitution of technological and architectural solutions, in relation to the functional needs, the performance levels and the relative morphologic, spatial and environmental results.

The course provides an examination of the problems profile in the contemporary territory and their spatial differentiation, and the consequent new planning guidelines in terms of components, spatial strategies and sequence of the construction plan. METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGICAL QUALITY CONTROL
The scope of the course is to provide the knowledge of the audit procedures, methods and instruments (such as BIM, Protocollo ITACA, LEED, etc.) in order to value in each and every phase of the process the respondance between regulatory requirements, performance standards and design solutions within the full life-cycle – LCA – of the architecture, till the certification and the monitoring during the operations of the on-going initial performances, the indoor comfort and the energy consumptions.
