Educational objectives

REPRESENTATION SCIENCE I
In order to supply a solid basic preparation of the principal elements of representation, the three courses of the sector are carried out in the first three years integrating theoretical and practical aspects. The first year provides the methods and the means to understand traditional drawing techniques integrating them with I.T. instruments. To provide the fundamentals of descriptive geometry in order to understand the laws and the methods for the representation and the conception of space and architectural forms. With this knowledge the student can face the first experiences of design.

HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
The aim of the Course consists in pointing out and discuss the questions and the theoretical and project points together with the most important trends and leaders of the XIX and XX Centuries architectural culture. During the Course development the students will lead towards the understanding of the questions proposed through the knowledge of the architectural masterpieces in their historical sequence and in their indivisible connection with the other contemporary artistic expressions. In the same time the aim consists in giving the students the indispensable instruments suitable for a critical knowledge of the contemporary architectural culture.

MATHEMATICS I
The course will cover a few element of logics, linear algebra, analytic geometry in 2 and 3 dimensions, elements of calculus: continuity, limits, differentiation and integration.

URBAN PLANNING LAW
The course deals with the most relevant legislative acts and decisions in urban planning and building laws. Classes are based on case studies, with specific regard to EU law. The course also examines environmental international and national norms. It aims at providing the students with a legal background in the field of urban planning.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 1
The Architectural Design Studio 1 focuses the design of a small building mainly for residential use, with individual activities and seminars, through lectures and exercises. Typological issues and spatial language are investigated, inherent to the subject of the exercise, in order to provide the student with the basic tools of architectural design. The studio is the site of application and verification of the knowledge acquired by students during the learning activities and the attendance of the first and second semester.

ARCHITECTURE TECHNOLOGY I
The course introduces the discipline of Technological Design of Architecture, articulated in monodisciplinary courses and technological and environmental design studios. The complexity of the building process, carried out under rules and procedures aiming at controlling the overall quality of the project and the construction, represents the framework for the study of the building techniques. The historical analysis of the architectural construction leads to the comprehension of the innovation dynamics and the responsible decision-making process, in relation to the project’s specifics. The responsive design approach, the life-cycle principles and the technical and economic feasibility notions guide all the practical exercises related to the use of materials and construction components, characterizing building sistems, techniques and construction processes.

TECHNICAL PHYSICS (ENVIRONMENTAL)
The course provides notions on the fundamental physical processes characterizing the various aspects of the mutual actions between man and the environment, such as energy management and the control of pollution and thermal, acoustic, and visual comfort, involving the entire perceptual system. The course is mainly theoretical in nature.

MECHANICS OF STRUCTURES
The course introduces the concepts and the fundamental procedures of Mechanics that are at the basis of the structural behaviour of both historical buildings and new structural typologies. In this framework, reference is mostly made to systems that can be modelled as rigid bodies, dealing with the main elementary structures that form parts of more complex architectural works. Yet, the main concepts relevant to systems of deformable beams are also addressed, paying special attention to the issues of structural strength and design.

URBAN DESIGN I
The course provides the first knowledge of the discipline and ability to recognize and represent both the structure and changes of the city and territory in relation to the economic, social and technological dynamics, highlighting relations with the disciplinary evolution. The training objective is realized in the development of a process of research, evaluation and definition of strategic planning guidelines of an urban or territorial reality.

MATHEMATICS II
The course completes the knowledge of the course “Mathematics I" through the study of the following topics: elements of differential and integral calculus for functions of multiple variable, ordinary differential equations; curves, surface; vector calculus.

HISTORY OF ANTIQUE AND MEDIEVAL ARCHITECTURE
The aim of the course is to provide general knowledge data by analyzing the most significant works of the periods indicated and the historical context in which they were carried out.
All this serves to train the student with the critical tools and analytical methods needed to study and better knowledge of the contexts dealt with.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2
In the studio the student will establish the draft of a public service in an urban area, with individual activities and seminars, through lectures and exercises. The typological, spatial, language issues and those relating to the relationship between building and environment with attention to sustainability - energy, social and environmental - of the design choices are investigated. It is asked to the student to develop a project, result of architectural choices made aware and motivated, supported by knowledge acquired during the training process.

REPRESENTATION SCIENCE II
The course offers the instruments to analyse and interpret architectural space, the use of drawing as a means to understand constructions and their surroundings, and descriptive geometry as an indispensable critical instrument, not just as a way to represent space and architectural form; the knowledge of the principles and their application using I.T. modelling both for existing and projected architecture.

ARCHITECTURE TECNOLOGY II
Through the systematic analysis and study of relevant traditional, innovative and experimental cases, the course provides the students with the scientific and technical knowledge in order to evaluate and control building design factors for the different types of buildings and operational scales. The knowledge of methods, instruments and state of the art buildings techniques guides the specific design exercises regarding the use of building systems, techniques and industrial building components, and moreover the design of on site assembly. The course concerns technical skills for the design management.

Students should be able to communicate without a dictionary (Reading, Writing and Listening), using a variety of structures and vocabulary at European B2 level (e.g. PET).

BUILDING SCIENCE
The course provides a unitary treatment of the mechanical behavior of deformable bodies modeled as Cauchy continuum, via the modeling of strain and stress aspects, along with the elastic behavior of materials. The study is focused on the theory of beams, presenting concepts and operational techniques concerned with the analysis of stresses, the evaluation of strength and deformability, and the analysis of structural stability. Analysis of buildings via a structural computer codes is addressed, in design terms, and the general issues of structural design and resistance in the elastic regime are presented.

URBAN DESIGN II
The course provides an examination of new outline of urban problems in the contemporary city and the consequent new learning directions at national and international level, in terms of components, spatial strategies and sequence of the construction plan. This is to identify the principles, actions and the processes of planning to realize functional, figurative and environment reorganization of cities and metropolitan areas. The training objective is realized in mastering the complex addresses of new forms of contemporary planning and design.

REPRESENTATION SCIENCE III
The course aims at providing the theoretical and practical background for the survey of architecture, of urban contexts and in general of the built environment. This objective will be achieved through the illustration of the different methodologies for the acquisition of metrical data as well as of the procedures and techniques for graphic representation, modelling, morphologic and thematic analysis finalized to documentation, restoration or refurbishment of built artifacts.

HISTORY OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE
The course aims at teaching historical and critical knowledge about the relation between the city and the territory with specific attention to themes and figures of the European tradition.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 3
In the studio the student will establish the draft of a residential complex of medium-sized integrated to the open space and the environment, with individual activities and seminars, through lectures and exercises. The studio integrates the elements of architectural and urban design with those more specific to the design and analysis of the green areas of the city and the territory. It is asked to the student to develop a project as a synthesis of morphological, distributional, technological and architectural solutions in construction including a degree of experimentation.

ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATIONThe aims of the Course consist in giving basic knowledge of both main stylistic building elements and criteria that characterize Architecture in its historical development, mainly related to the one choose for the training in the Course. Moreover, paying attention to the main principles about architectural conservation, the Course will approach some theoretic and practical cases preparing the practical applications in the following studio of Architectural Conservation and Preservation.

The studio focuses on the design experimentation of technologies for transformation, realization and management of the environment built from the perspective of a demanding / performance approach in the realization of building structures.
The objective of the course is to train students in the development of architectural solutions that are integrated and consistent with their specific conceptual design, valued in terms of originality and technological innovation, in terms of social, environmental and economic sustainability, while respecting morphological quality.
Through the elaboration of a project developed on urban scale, building and detail, students will experiment with the use of materials, technologies, constructive systems and implementation processes, by evaluating alternate hypotheses of sustainability in its various meanings.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN STUDIO
The course provides the conceptual and analytical tools for the prediction and interpretation of the behaviour of structures. It also provides the elements of performance requirements verification according to modern limit-state design codes. During the course of the semester the students work in small teams to develop a complete structural design project.

URBAN PLANNING STUDIO
The course provides the theoretical, pragmatic and procedural tools for drafting a project to manage the contemporary city, territory and environment.The students will be able to understand the relationships among objectives, strategies and spatial solutions, the relationships between local structures and territorial visions and relationships among plan, urban design, quantities and rules.The training objective is to manage the complexity of territorial transformations in the integrated construction of new morphological structures.

TECHNICAL SYSTEMS PLANT
The course aims to provide knowledge for the design of plant systems, aimed at the thermal comfort and air quality. We intend to provide the knowledge about the tools needed to design the technical evaluation based on integration of technical systems within a building. Will be widely discussed issues relating to energy and environmental sustainability of the building, both with respect to new construction (Nearly Zero Energy Buildings), both with regard to the redevelopment of existing buildings.

ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION STUDIO
The aims of the studio consist in teaching basic knowledge in the history and theory of architectural conservation; in providing skill in analytical survey and historical investigation; in reading and diagnosing degradation; in providing conservation works; in informing students about regulation and cataloguing for architectural conservation; in practicing and designing a restoration project.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 4
In the studio the student will establish the draft of a complex organism with particular attention to issues of construction and its feasibility, with individual activities and seminars, through lectures and exercises. The studio integrates the elements of architectural and urban design with the more specific design of installations and use of environmental technologies aimed at energy saving. The student has to complete a project that, in a conscious way, renders in a formal synthesis all the aspects that contribute to the construction of the architecture.

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF ECONOMIC EVALUATION
The course provides the framework of the basic notions of evaluation, setting out recent theoretical-methodological developments at international level and the principles of sustainable development, and provide the theoretical-methodological tools for three area of operation: a) the valuation of real property, developed on scientific bases and extended to environmental, landscape and cultural heritage resources; b) feasibility studies of complex projects, carried out during the elaboration of the project and in the preliminary planning phase, the latter viewed as the strategic point with respect actualization of the project; c) valuation in the management of the process of settlement development: from project phase and execution of the works, to the operative phase.

The final exam consists of a thesis, elaborated individually with a single speaker or group of speakers co-ordinated within thesis laboratories, either a design or theoretical methodological (historical or technical) type, as a thorough development of the disciplinary content dealt with during the master degree course, even with the provision of interdisciplinary knowledge. It has to express technical and expressive maturity, as an original and updated contribution to the most advanced positions of the disciplinary debate. The final exam recognizes 14 CFU.
