ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO

Course objectives

The course objective is to achieve, within the educational process of students, and overall and articulated experience in which converge all the components of architecture disciplinary process. In addition to the essential morphological, technological, constructive and typological in-depth examinations, the course aims to take into account all the data concerning urban settings included construction in historical centers. The project issues located in the urban fabric will be therefore preferably analyzed and taken as case studies.

Course program
The Laboratory's theme is the design of the Santa Croce in Gerusalemme area, which lies between Porta Maggiore and Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, bordered and enclosed by the Aurelian Walls and the Acquedotto Felice along Via Casilina and Viale Castrense and open towards Piazza di Santa Croce. It contains numerous artefacts from various eras: the remains of a circus, the Castrense Amphitheatre, the temple of Venus and Cupid from the 3rd century A.D. and dwellings from the 4th century A.D.; the complex of the Basilica of Santa Croce; the Museum of the Grenadiers and the artefacts from the Umberto I barracks from the 1920s, now used as the Infantry History Museum, the Museum of Musical Instruments and the headquarters of the Cinema and Audiovisual Directorate-General. This area, although in good condition, is isolated from the rest of the city; the Museum of Musical Instruments and the headquarters of the General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisuals are invisible from the urban space; both the archaeological remains and the open spaces are inaccessible, enclosed by fences according to the different ownerships, although it is an area entirely belonging to the State. The project, the outcome of the Workshop, will therefore have to address these urban issues: the accessibility and restitution of the large open area to the city; the definition of an urban front on Piazza di Santa Croce and Via Eliana; the creation of a cultural and museum centre that enhances the presence of the archaeological remains, that boosts the art exhibition activity already taking place in the Infantry Museum, that integrates the Museum of Musical Instruments and the headquarters of the General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisuals with a school for the arts, music, dance and cinema. The project will be developed at both urban (1:1000 and 1:500) and architectural (1:200) scales. For the architectural scale, there are three themes that the workshop proposes: the reuse and extension of the historical Infantry Museum and the Grenadier Museum as exhibition spaces for shows and events; an archaeological museum that at the same time protects the ruins; a school of the arts, music, dance and cinema in connection with the Museum of Musical Instruments and the headquarters of the General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisual.
