Attendance

Other training activities that award credits

The CCLM, on the proposal of the CCL and the faculty, organizes the offering of elective educational activities, which can be carried out through ex cathedra lectures, seminars, interactive small-group courses, uncoordinated activities or those linked in "homogeneous educational pathways," among which the student exercises their personal choice, up to the achievement of a total of 8 CFU.

Elective activities also include elective internships carried out in research laboratories or clinical departments for a value of at least one CFU, with attendance two or three times a week, for a total of no less than 25 hours.

Types of ADE - ADE can be structured as:

Seminars, Tutorials, Monographic Courses, certified participation in Conferences and/or Congresses (subject to authorization by the Presidency or the CTP), and discussion of clinical cases also through telematic methods (intended as interactive learning courses in small groups aimed at facilitating better Teacher-Student interaction);
Elective internships or clinical and laboratory tutorials in Italy and abroad (these must be considered as moments of intense educational content such as, for example, attendance in the operating room, delivery room, emergency department, or a research laboratory to achieve a specific objective).

ADE HOURS CFU
Monodisciplinary seminar/tutorial 2 0.20
Multidisciplinary seminar/tutorial ≥2 0.25–0.30
Elective Internship 25 1
Monographic course Minimum 5 0.50

The following may also be considered elective educational activities: seminars, attendance in general medicine outpatient clinics according to agreements stipulated with the faculty.

Choice of ADE by students
Each student independently chooses ADE from the educational offerings. ADE must be carried out at times that do not interfere with other forms of educational activity.

Certification and evaluation of ADE
The acquisition of credits assigned to ADE occurs only with 100% attendance.
ADE may be organized throughout the entire year, even outside periods of teaching activity.
For each elective educational activity established, the CCLM appoints a Coordinator responsible for evaluating, with defined methods, the commitment shown by individual students in achieving the defined educational objectives. The completed ADE, with the corresponding credits and evaluation, are certified by the instructor through a dedicated university IT application.
The calendar of elective educational activities is published before the beginning of the academic year, or in any case before each teaching period, together with the calendar of mandatory educational activities.
Elective teaching constitutes an official activity of the faculty and as such is recorded in the lecture register.
The evaluation of individual elective educational activities carried out by the student is taken into consideration in assigning the grade of the final exam of the course that organized the respective elective educational activities.
Attendance at ADE is mandatory for achieving the CFU required by the curriculum and may also be considered for the assignment of the thesis.

Apprenticeship

In accordance with Article 3 of Decree No. 58 of May 9, 2018, of the Minister of Education, Universities, and Research, as amended,
aimed at obtaining professional certification (https://www.gazzettaufficiale.it/eli/id/ 2018/06/01/18G00082/sg),
as part of the credits to be earned throughout the entire educational program and allocated to professional training activities, 15 credits
must be allocated to the completion of the quarterly practical-evaluation internship (TPV) within the degree program for qualification
in the medical profession.
This TPV takes place during the fifth and sixth years of the program for a number of hours corresponding to at least 5 credits per
month and is divided into the following periods, which may not be consecutive: one month in the Surgical Department; one month in the Medical Department; one month
to be completed, no earlier than the sixth year, in the field of General Medicine. The months of attendance may not overlap
with one another. Each individual credit hour (CFU) allocated to the practical-evaluation internship must correspond to at least 20 hours of professional-oriented educational activities and no more than 5 hours of individual study.

Pursuant to Article 102, paragraph 1, of Decree-Law No. 18/2020 (https://www.gazzettaufficiale.it/eli/id/2020/03/17/20G00034/sg),
the final exam of the single-cycle Master’s Degree Program in Medicine and Surgery serves as the state licensing exam qualifying the holder to practice
the profession of Medical Surgeon, subject to successful completion of the practical-evaluation internship.
Furthermore, in accordance with Ministerial Decree 1649 of December 19, 2023, the degree program reserves an additional 8 ECTS credits at the student’s discretion within the mandatory internship credits required for professional training activities, to provide career guidance and enhance vocational autonomy in post-graduate choices. The degree program offers multidisciplinary internship tracks chosen by the student (TSS), each worth 8 ECTS credits, structured into two modules: the first (3 ECTS credits) covers general disciplines, and the second (5 ECTS credits) covers specific disciplines relevant to the theme of the individual internship [1]. The TSS programs will be available to students enrolled in the 2025-26 academic year.

Tutoring

The tutoring activities of the single-cycle Master’s Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery are consistent with the University’s policies and form part of the framework set out in the University Plan for Guidance and Tutoring [1] published on the University website, which provides for differentiated tutoring initiatives for new students, ongoing support, academic support and support for graduating students. The degree programme makes use of the tutoring services provided by the Faculty and developed in collaboration with the University, such as the Guidance and Tutoring Service (SOrT) (https://farmed.web.uniroma1.it/it/orari-sportello-sort-servizio-orientam...) and the services dedicated to students with specific needs (e.g. disabilities and SLDs) (https://farmed.web.uniroma1.it/it/node/7737). These activities are designed to support students in their career development, remove any obstacles to academic progress and encourage informed choices throughout their studies. A key feature of the degree programme’s tutoring is the presence of a structured ongoing tutoring system, aimed at managing study methods, organising university work and strengthening transferable skills.
Activities take place at the Library of the Institute of Human Anatomy, with the support of student tutors, and include: - individual methodological consultations, - supervised study, - targeted revision sessions, - remedial support in specific subjects. Evidence gathered in recent years demonstrates a positive impact on academic performance and retention, particularly in the early semesters. The degree programme also provides academic and clinical tutoring, carried out in coordination with the lecturers responsible for the courses and with clinical tutors. At the Skill Lab of the Policlinico Umberto I, specially trained tutors support students during practical sessions and activities, facilitating the transition from pre-clinical skills to professional activities within the ward. The effectiveness of the tutoring activities is monitored through a dedicated questionnaire, prepared by the Programme Chair and the Departmental Coordinator [4], the results of which contribute to the review and continuous improvement of the programme. Overall, the degree programme’s tutoring system, structured across multiple levels (methodological, disciplinary, clinical) and integrated with University and Faculty services, supports students throughout their entire course of study and takes into account the results of career monitoring to implement targeted interventions at critical stages of the programme.

Path of excellence

The Excellence Program is designed to enhance the educational experience of enrolled students who are deserving and interested in in-depth study and cultural enrichment. It is a supplementary program consisting of educational activities that complement the student’s degree program, including interdisciplinary seminar-style and internship activities designed to foster students’ talents and aptitude for participation in research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors, clinicians, and/or laboratory staff.
ACTIVITIES
The activities are partly planned by the relevant academic department and consist of disciplinary and interdisciplinary in-depth studies, seminars, and internships, and partly agreed upon with individual students, in relation to their cultural and scientific interests.
The total educational activities entail a maximum annual time commitment for the student as established by the degree program and do not result in the awarding of academic credits.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROGRAM
As a rule, the number of participants is determined by a selective admission process.

ASSESSMENTS/REQUIREMENTS FOR CONTINUATION IN THE PROGRAM
For each student admitted to the program of excellence, at the end of each academic year, the student’s performance is evaluated by the faculty advisors. In order to continue in the program of excellence, the student must not only have completed the program’s required activities but also meet any criteria established by the degree program, as specified in the relevant call for applications
PROCEDURAL INFORMATION
Please refer to the relevant call for applications, which will be published in due course on the Faculty and degree program websites.

Minor courses

The Department offers students the “MINOR IN DIGITAL MEDICINE” an interdisciplinary thematic educational track, complementary to the single-cycle master’s degree program (class LM-41 or LM-46) in which the student is enrolled (main degree program), aimed at broadening the scope of the primary education and training professionals with additional skills useful for continuing their studies and entering the workforce.
Students may design an integrated educational pathway totaling 20 ECTS credits of a cross-disciplinary nature, partly extracurricular with respect to the main degree program, and a thesis project for the single-cycle master’s degree that includes references to the educational objectives of the Minor. Enrollment in the Minor is free, and its completion is certified in the Diploma Supplement.
Further information and conditions for participation are outlined in the annual call for applications.

Job Orientation - further information

The initiatives designed to introduce and support students on the degree programme as they enter the world of work are consistent with the University’s policies and take into account the employment prospects and further educational pathways typical of graduates in Medicine and Surgery. At University level, students can make use of the services offered by the Sapienza Career Service (https://www.uniroma1.it/it/pagina/career-service), which provides career guidance, support with CV writing, mock interviews and information on postgraduate career and training opportunities. These services are complemented by events bringing students into contact with the professional and institutional world, organised by the University and the Faculty. Given the specific nature of the graduate profile, the degree programme places particular emphasis on initiatives guiding students towards further study, such as postgraduate specialisation schools, training courses in General Practice and PhD programmes.
This also includes initiatives promoted at faculty and university level, such as the SAPIS platform (Sapienza – Preparation for Specialisation Entry), aimed at students in their final years of study. The degree programme complements these initiatives with educational activities that promote awareness of career prospects and working environments, including through optional modules, seminars and work placements, thereby helping to guide students progressively towards postgraduate choices. Overall, these initiatives help to maintain a systematic alignment between university education, professional needs and postgraduate pathways, in line with the results of monitoring employment outcomes and the prospects of the healthcare sector.
